Good video Ben...
I've literally caught over probably 500 fish from that area especially around the old bridge area/pile spot. Good times thumb
And have seen the Beavers right there where you guys were standing over the years. No Eagles there this year?

The boys and I are just going to walk into and fish Nails creek at the mouth. The boys have done OK on two trips to Nails and it is a whole lot easier than dragging yaks for two hours or more to the Yegua. I'm all about catching fish in the short amount of time I get on the creek... We are looking for crappie and will use minnows and jigs wink Not many whitebass are in the creek from what I hear from the guys making the drag up the Yegua.

Hey all, new to this forum. I'm pretty active on texaskayakfisherman but new to this one. Yesterday I made my first trip up to the Yegua. I had done a kayak trip to Nails creek with Ben a few weeks prior but never made it to the Yegua. The fishing yesterday (1/11) was awesome......caught over 30 crappie with 15 being keepers. I also caught a nice 3 lb black bass and 2 channel cats on juglines that I had set out while I was working my way up the Yegua. I thought I was out there alone until I saw Hector (Ultralite84) as he was paddling back. Look forward to meeting some of you other guys on future trips, heres some pics from the day.

Welcome to the forum, forager1! Nice catch.

Great video, Ben. Especially enjoyed the shot of the eagles flying around.

Hey guys, new to the forum and was wondering if I could get some advice. Want to take my girl fishing on wed for some crappie and am limited to the bank. So 2 things, where to fish, and from what I have read looks like nails creek is the way to go on that, but more importantly is the technique used to catch them. I plan to get minnows, but I'm more of a jig fisherman myself. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Minnows or jigs fished under a float should work. Just be prepared to do some hiking if you're fishing Nails Creek. It's a good little walk from the park.

Thanks jsinn, definately don't mind hiking, I'm used to walking up and down the Yegua for whites from sun up to sun down. Any advice on where in nails creek to start? I'm assuming I'm looking for bends on the creek with deep water?

I would start with the area closest to the mouth and work your way upstream. I don't think there's a ton of water in there right now so the fish will probably be in the deeper holes and bends closer to the lake. That means hiking in from NCSP instead of CR 125.

You could hike in from CR 125, I just don't think there's enough water that far upstream to do very well. I could be wrong though. wink

Might try the fish house over at Big creek Marina. You won't be walking/hiking and enjoying the outdoors but you make catch some crappie.

Corps of Engineers says lake it still nearly three feet low. Did recent rain help the creeks at all? I am targeting weekend of Jan 24-25 to come up there and would prefer to kayak Yegua but we will walk it if we have to.

Where can I get minnows close to nails creek? And I've been wondering if they have been catching them on the marina, but I think I'd rather get out and walk, the exercise will do me good haha.

Recent rain hasn't been enough to run-off so the lake is just holding steady at around 235.3.

The upper end of Nails creek doesn't have much water and what is there is tough to fish. We fished the lower end last Saturday and did pretty well but there is a limited number of crappie in Nails so the fishing is going to get tougher until or if it floods again.

For those few yakers tough enough to drag the yak to the Yegua most have been rewarded with catches of crappie and catfish. It is a very hard way to catch fish but also effective for those up to the challenge. I may be out there yet this week, maybe Thursday but I'm not sure if I'm up for the drag. We really need a good flood to boot this thing into high gear..
