So do the leader guys tie the leader long enough to do a few lure changes but short enough so you don't have to reel a knot or swivel past the rod top guide?

I use the slim beauty knot and it runs through the guides of most of my rods very well. I try to use 8 to 10 feet on a spinning reel, and about 5 feet on a bait caster.
The knot doesn't seem to be a problem in spinning gear, but I am so dang worried about that knot hanging up on the level wind guide on the bait casters damaging it.

The only time I use a leader (either mono or fluro) is for teethy critters or for rigs that I have made before the trip. Otherwise, I see no need to use a leader.

I only use braid now when fishing top water lures (since it floats), and I tie straight to the lure.

Fluorocarbon leader it may be a confidence thing but I definitely catch more fish on it.

I'm not convinced that saltwater species in areas I fish worry too much about the line. A lot of the time I will use a leader though so I can swap easy to a spook or skitterwalk. Some of the largest largemouth bass I've caught came from a weightless LFT ringfry with hook tied to braid.

Always tied directly to braid. Watch guys mess with leaders and doesnt make them catch anymore fish.
