1) Ranger Percent market share 30% 2) Nitro, Percent market share < 25% 3) Skeeter Percent market share 17% 4) Triton Percent market share 8% 5) Phoenix Percent market share 6% 6) BassCat Percent market share 4% 7) Stratos Percent market share <4% 9) Legend Percent market share 2% 10) Blazer Percent market share <1%
The % of market share has been relatively stable since 2010. The one company that has really improved is Phoenix. They've over doubled their market share since 2010. The information I have even gives the units each company sold, by year, since 2010. I cannot vouch for the accuracy, but it looks like someone spent a great deal of time doing the research. It's hard to imagine how companies with less than 1% maarket share can even stay in business. You are talking less than 20 boats sold per year!!!

I typically associate mass production and large market share with poor quality. I'm sure Bayliner and Tahoe make up a large market share of the pleasure boat market, but those are not quality boats IMO. Quality boats take longer to build and cost more money. Just because a large portion of the market can't afford them doesn't mean their bad boats or companies.

The private companies on the list must have been educated guesses at best as they don't report sales and some keep that information very closely guarded.

This is not a slam on Phoenix but when you only sell a couple hundred (or even twice that) boats a year it is not too hard to double your market share.

Just because a large portion of the market can't afford them doesn't mean their bad boats or companies. I don't think your assumption is necessarily valid, based on a couple of things. The novice boater might buy one of the boats you mentioned, and based on how he used it, it might be just fine. On the other hand, how many Bayliner and Tahoe owners have you ever met that were on their 2nd Bayliner or Tahoe? That doesn't stop a whole lot of other novices from buying without consulting anyone else. Large market share in the Bass Boat Market is certainly based on brand loyalty, ease of service including dealer satisfaction, and materials of construction. There is one boat in particular on that top 10 list that looks great at first glance, is relatively easily financed and really appeals to the novice bass boater. I haven't met a whole lot of folks that were on their second or third of that particular brand.

Just remember something....Ranger started out small too....Unless you have unlimited resources (does the name Johnny Morris mean anything to you?), a small business has to start out small and grow itself. I will say this, I've met a few Phoenix owners, and never heard any of them say negatives. Too early to tell whether those same guys will be running one in 10 years.

I see more Skeeters and Tritons on the water than I do Rangers irregardless of those % numbers. I beleive my eyes. Ya think it might have something to do with Skeeters being made in Texas? If you would have been on Rayburn the first week of May last year you would have thought the only boat made was a BassCat. Another consideration is the regionality of a great deal of the boats. Have you ever even seen a Norris Craft in Texas? How many Chargers? But if you were on the Lake of the Ozarks you would see a ton of them.

Ken, you may be confusing doubling sales with doubling market share? BTW. Its hard to understand these numbers. Doe Phoenix really have a larger share than Basscat?

How can Ranger be at the top when they build them one at a time?

I always thought Nitro sold the most boats. I'm not surprised to see Ranger at #1 though. I owned one and it was a great boat. I was looking for one the last time but just didn't come across the right deal. I'm very happy with what I have though.

Surprised to see Triton at only 8%. I know more than 8% of the boats I see at local lakes are Tritons (probably somewhere between 10-20% if I had to guess). I've got one that's now 17 years old. We drove it off the lot new and it's been a great boat. No plans to sell it anytime soon.

The private companies on the list must have been educated guesses at best as they don't report sales and some keep that information very closely guarded. They are still registered, with details such as previous owner (MFG and/or dealer) and brand, etc.
