I changed out my water pump on my Mercury 115 ELPTO today. After I put the lower unit back on, the prop will only turn clockwise and it feels like it something is hitting inside the lower unit. it will not turn at all counter clockwise. anyone know how I messed that up?

You need to take the lower unit loose. The splines on the shifter did not line up right.
You don't need to lower it all the way. Just until you can restab the shifter.

Thats one of those Merc lowers that if you move the mainshaft while installing a water pump impeller it will jump into reverse. The shift dog is spring loaded toward reverse. Be care full and not force the shift shaft because if you try to turn it the wrong direction you can bend the shift shaft in the lower. Be careful not to bugger up the male splines. Lower the lower unit down about an inch & a half(supported by metal folding chair or other) enough to turn the shift shaft sticking up from the lower unit, while rotating the prop turn shift shaft untill you find neutral. When you find neutral you will feel it hold itself in place. Raise lower back into place and check with shifter. May take a few times to find the right place for the shift shaft.

That was it. Made for an easy fix. Way more helpful than " You have it in gear " !!!!

I turn the shift shift clockwise which is forward gear and put the control box in forward to stab it up that way one you can use the prop to turn and spline it and it goes up in the right gear

From now on I will always put motor in neutral and lower unit in neutral ... Just turn the main shaft slightly if the splines don't line up ...

When you turn the main shaft installing the water pump housing, it will jump all the way into reverse. V6 Mercs and Mariners are not spring loaded toward reverse. I made a tool to hold the shaft in place.
