So I was going to take my 17' 1995 Ranger with 115 Merc out this past weekend. Upon getting ready to hook the boat up, I noticed my steering was bound up anywhere other than the couple of inches it has been sitting at for the past month or so in the garage. It will move, but only with significant effort. Any ideas on where to start? This has never done this before. The cables aren't bound up, as the steering worked perfectly upon putting it in the garage (the motor sits to the side for clearance). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

More than likely the steering cable went bad where it makes the turn in the body it Builds up with gunk ams binds the cable and there is no way to service it / or the cable is bound up in the tilt tube and you can take the cable loose from the motor and see if it will move in the tube to check it

Probably a steering cable is toast ... Mine just did the same thing last August , do yourself a favor and buy a new cable .

Thanks, guys. Wasn't sure, but that's what I thought. Great.

Get ahold of Gunter Marine on Hwy 199. He can inject it with fluid and 90% of the time fix it.

If it's been super cold run a blow dryer over the cables and heat the grease a bit. Sometimes it works
