i have an 1989 evinrude 150 and it doesnt go into reverse and when i crank it up (everytime) it idles very high like as if it was at full throttle. The only time it doesnt idle high is when its in gear. Can someone help me? thanks!

Sounds like you need a boat mechanic.

I don't know how to fix it, but I bet it's a linkage issue for sure.

Sound like the Reverse linkage may have an obstruction( loose screw,nut,etc)
preventing proper operation.

Reverse linkage or bound up cables in control box if you need some one to look at it I would be happy to help

I had a simular thing happen this past summer. I was in a small cove near the shore and when I was ready to leave I cranked up the boat put it in reverse and it went forward,I quickly killed the motor and thinking I was a dummy and had put it in forward. Restarted the motor and it went forward, forward in neutral,forward in reverse it did not matter. Loaded up eventually took it to the mech. and the linkage under the carbs.
the screw had come out leaving it locked in forward. the Mech. replaced the screw said he had never had that happen before. I'm thinking the last time the water pump was changed the mech. (not the same one )did not tighten the screw up enough. Just a thought.
