Just a reminder for anyone bumping a stump in the winter months.I was idling on Welsh and bumped a stump with the big motor idling. Nothing unusual like I've done a thousand times before.
However noticed later the motor would not go into reverse.
After inspection on trailer at end of an awesome day noticed a small ding in the prop. Lowered motor and drained all water and trailered home,
Parked in the carport and went to bed.
After pulling the lower unit off and upon further inspection with the progressive insurance agent present noticed a crack in the bottom of the unit. Insurance agent and myself agree that it is a "freeze" crack with evidence of water inside the gear oil. Bumping the stump evidently caused the seal to rupture allowing the water to enter the gearcase. When it froze that night of course the gearcase busted.
Progressive says no payment due to "obvious freeze damage".
Even tho it was the result of an accident, dinged prop and reverse gear not engaging.
So anytime you bump a stump take a very long and thorough inspection of your gearcase
And check your oil for water just in case so you won't be out a lower unit
And shopping for a new insurance company.

they pulled that same krap on me after I hit a submerged cedar, a bunch of cedars had been cut for a bad fire around the lake and a bunch got pushed in the water. I nailed one full throttle and trashed the lower, blamed it on metal fatigue. never again will I even think about progressive.

I hit a stump on Fayette two years ago and the motor stopped running. Took the boat to Stracks and they saw the crack in the lower unit. Called my State Farm agent, told them the story, got an estimate, State Farm wrote check, problem fixed. State Farm paid for it sight unseen.

Be safe,

Well...everyone should just look and see who owns Progressive and see what he supports before using them.

Exactly!!! More people need to know how liberal this guy is! Enjoy the commercials but don't buy the insurance!

State farm will say the same. Never mention freezing. Mention the obviouse lower unit locking up and tweaking the gears to crack the housing

Have had to deal with Progressive claim adjusters that are X boat mechanics lately and in talking to one on a claim he admitted his primary job lately has become to try to deny the claim.

I used progressive for years but after I had a denied claim on major repair I switched to Farmers/Formost and have made 2 claims in the last 3 years and have had zero problems.
I use Dillon Lee as my agent. He gets on here some.
