Hi folks I am pleading for some useful info for later this week at Mustang Island. I'm driving down from Austin with my teen age son and daughter to the state park to camp for three days and need some info on the best approach for them to have some fun catching! We'll be "roughing it" so to speak so I'm really motivated to make it worth their while and rewarding. No boat, so pier/jetty/walking only. I am assuming the best chances are deep water, but where? We have fished Packery Jetty south so familiar there. What about Mustang Is. jetty? Surf? Any particular species of fish most likely to be found this time of year? Any help is greatly appreciated and I will post a full report when I return.

I am headed down there with the family on Christmas day. I plan on fishing the surf with shrimp. I did real good there on Thanksgiving in the surf but it may be different now. Good luck to y'all!

I would fish the mustang island jetties. Try for big reds and pompano
The sheepshead should also be good. Mix it up with different bait on top and bottom

Thanks for the replies, I'll give the jetties at the park a good effort this evening. Will try to get over to the piers on the causeway and Packery as well tomorrow and sunday. Will post a report on sunday or monday.

We have been fishing the surf and Packery for two days without any luck. I think we need some better weather. Surf is really rough and dirty. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

A friend and I are also down here fishing the packery channel in north padre with out luck. We've been throwing frozen shrimp and cut mullet. Still looking for those reds..

Typha if your still fishing down there you might try the packery channey county park. Saturday we tried it there and caught a bunch of big perch, a undersize red and undersize black drum. It was a lot of action anyway. We were using frozen shrimp. Good Luck!
