My son wants to take a father son trip for his birthday pretty cool but I've never fished on a river. I have a wilderness ride 115 and he has a small kayak. Any pros please answer a few question. Thanks for any info.
Best place to camp ?lake whitney dam? When do sand bass start running. What gear and baits to take? Thinking about putting in at Whitney dam and paddling up and down river a few miles.

Most people opt to camp at one of the parks right there at the dam. Loafers bend is a good choice. Paddling down a few miles and back up should not be a problem. There is no true sand bass run on this part of the river. For that you would need to go above the lake in the river/creeks. Go to baits would be weightless/weedless soft plastics, flukes, senkos, and swimbaits. This stretch is excellent for catfish as well so you might want to consider some live/cut bait if that interests you.
A good two day trip would be to put in at the dam first day and fish down and back up. Camp over night at Loafers then put in at Dicks the next morning and fish up and back down.

I'm with Federale... I'm not as much an expert as some here on the Brazos but there really aren't any great spots on that stretch to camp IMO. I'm thinking about taking my nephews on a trip from the dam to Dicks sometime this year. I'm actually thinking we'll drive down on a Friday, stay at Meridian SP (which is one of my favorite SPs in the state and only about 25 miles away), get up early and do the float next day.
