I was pretty lucky as I started working at a tackle store (US Sports Sales) when I was 15 years old. Ended up being the buyer there for years so got to know a lot of good anglers. Learned a lot from Bobby and Billy Murray. And some great local guys like Ronnie Allen, Clarence Steward, Ray Murski and his brother Tom. Fished with all of them and they all are or were great fishermen.
Retirement best job ever.

Ken, do you remember a guy named Alex McCoy ? He used to hang out at Axtons in the 90's when you had your first bullet boats. Yes I do. I remember talking with him on more than one occasion. Tommy Yetts is another one that taught me a thing or two about fishing. He loves those crabapple Sensations.

Theres been a few my great grandfather got me started when i was only three then my stepfather helped along the way but my biggest bass mentors have been mike kiolbasa a man who knows every lake we fish like the back of his hand he is amazing. And my uncle kenneth brackenridge who taught me certain patterns how to read a lake and become a tournament angler. Without these guys i would not be the fisherman i am today.

Gerald Roebuck was my mentor. I was lucky to have spent some quality time with him. First as a customer and then as friends. I learned a lot about Fork and Monticello in the late 80's and 90's. Gerald passed away way to young but I am grateful for the time he invested in me.

Never had a mentor for much of anything. Guess that's why I'm such a basshole, LOL.
Just had to through that in...
I grew up in salt & had an old salt as a mentor. He was a friend of my dad's but he swore me to secrecy not to tell my dad. Kinda weird, but I heard my dad thought fishermen were losers at the time.
Me & my buddy would peddle our bikes the 30 or 40 miles from Huntington to San Clemente to meet Bob Winn on the weekends. We'd have to start around 3AM to get down there.
Ol' Bob would teach us knots, casting, rod care, cooking & a little about women. It was a great experience & for the most part, I never got in trouble over it.
Good times, but I sure wish my dad was part of it :-S

He was a true conservationist and funny too. So many stories I could tell about him. He was an incredibly talented bass angler who loved the sport of bass angling. He was great on Monticello and Fork and probably knew Lake Winnsboro better that any man alive. He would also be the first guy to approach you if he saw you breaking the law or littering the lake. I too am grateful to have known him and called him friend. R.I.P Gerald and you are correct, he died way too young.

I don't have one in particular, but come across many passionate anglers that I learn a lot from and inspire me.

my brother lit the fuse, then "bang" I was off...watching Bill Dance and Al Linder, joined B.A.S.S. when I was a kid and getting that magazine was like striking gold, I would study every page ( i still have every issue ), also reading every other fishing magazine out there...but the thing that did the most was all the day's spent at the pond - yes sir Ol'Mr.Bass Fish himself was my best mentor !!!

My Father was my mentor and the best topwater fisherman I have ever fished with "may he rest in peace" I have watched him catch bass on a topwater during the wintertime when you thought their was no chance.
The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything. Remember what He has done and remember that He is not done yet!-- GOD IS GOOD
