The base frequency is many khz and is not audible to humans or fish.
But this base frequecy on our sonars is turned on and off (pinged) and this pinging creates several signals that are quite audible by humans and fish.

Lou, you are probably correct but, at my age, I'm lucky to hear my Merc let alone the sonar ping! I think you are referring to the rep rate, not the frequency of the crystal which we know based on transducer.

I can hear mine when I am sitting near the transducer which is mounted on center of hull. I leave my bow mount on while fishing but have wondered about impact on the fish. I can feel felt the pings if i put my hand under the transducer.

I definitely do. When I'm fishing on top of a brush pile I can see mt jig going down and I know when it's right on top of the brush. A lot of times I can see the fish coming up and eating my jig. Pretty cool
