Hi Fellow Anglers,

A friend of mine got a 2012 Mercury 4 stroke 40hp and he had it sat in his garage since August. Well on Monday he couldn't get it to start. Battery was fully charged and kill switch was off. He primed it and he couldn't get to run at all. Any suggestions for troubleshooting? I've been working long hours and I don't have the time to help him. Thank you for any help.

When you let a motor sit for that long without starting it is not good.

If the gas in the tank has been sitting just as long without a gas treatment of some sort then you will get phase separation, that's if it is ethanol gas.

Gas in the fuel system of the motor will gum up and clog fuel filters and injectors.

Drain and replace gas. Check fuel filter. Spray carb cleaner into carbs and let it sit for a few minutes. Crank it a few times, then spray starter fluid into carbs.

Waiting on Bob Davis' next selfie

If it will not start at all I would check to be sure it is firing first of all.

I don't think since August is very long to set. Those motor normally start very easy. You can check the fuel for water at the fuel filter and check for spark but you most likely have a problem with the electric fuel pump or its relay. You should be able to hear the pump when key is turned on. Check the fuses under the cowling. Hav`nt run in to this on the Merc but have on some other outboards like 250 SHO`s.

When you say sitting in the garage, was it standing up or laying down? if laying down, what side was it laying on? I laid my Mercury down one time on the wrong side and it wouldn't crank. Reason... oil got on the plugs and fouled them out. Changed plugs and it cranked right up. Smoked a little at first but cleared up. Also, with plugs out, spray a little gas in plug holes and hit starter. That will help get rid of some of the oil in that area. It worked for me.

Thank for the help. I'll check those suggestions this weekend when I swing by his house. Thank you for all the help. If we get to run I'll let your know.

Just curious. What did you ever find out on your motor?

@Southernboy...I called him and he told me the motor was trying to turn. He replaced the battery and it started right up. Bad battery. Simple fix!
