This weeks Tip is on Vertical Jig Size! Jig size: I often get asked what jig size should I buy. This really all depends on a few factors. Some of these factors are targeted species, depth and current. Heavy tail type jigs tend to fall faster since they have less water resistance and sometimes will help you use less heavy jigs to reach the bottom. Choosing the jigs shape thin jigs, fat jigs, odd shapes ect all factor into if you want to match the hatch at your particular location. If there is bait in the area and they are long thin types of baits then using a longer thinner type of jig like our Victory Lures Blue Dart vertical jig is a good option (we are working on two new colors for spring 2014!). If you want something that has a mix of thinner and wider parts then the 7oz green terror is a nice option as well for your vertical jig. There are days when you do not see the bait or the fish are not feeding this is when reaction strikes are your friend! When I get to a location I usually start off with a 3-5oz flutter type jig like our pink thunder and work my way up in weight if needed or change the jig shapes until I find what causes a reaction bite from the fish we are making on our sounder.
