I need a new dock skipping reel to go a 6'6" MH/f rod, and I can't decide if the PQ would be good for this.

I realize that it is more in the thumb than in the reel, but it is nice to have a reel better suited for skipping. I have found over a few years that mag. brakes are better for skipping when it comes to control. I am no pro so I still need a good braking system to assist me. I have never used a PQ, but it has magnetic and centrifugal brakes, so I figured it might be good for skipping.

Does anyone use the PQ for skipping? How is it for this?

Thanks

Also, if you have a reel around the $100 range that you would recommend for skipping, please go ahead and do so. All help is much appreciated.

The BPS PQ has been perfect for everything I have used it for. I have three and will buy more no doubt. The oldest one is 3 years old and still catching big bass. I am not great at skipping docks so good brake control is important to me. The brakes are better than any other reel I have used IMO. They are a lot better than my Qauntum Smoke. I'm sorry I can't give you more info on using them for skipping, but the brakes they are awesome. Great all around reel.

I skip docks and bushes a lot. Its one of my favorite ways to fish. I find the rod to be the most important factor in skipping. for me, as long as I have a rod with a good soft tip and a solid backbone, I can skip with it, regardless of the reel I have mounted on it. The key is to have your brakes set very loose, or turned off completely. Use your thumb to fan the spool throughout the presentation. It takes practice and even once you get good, you will experience an occasional professional overrun. That said, any quality reel that you are comfortable with should work fine. If you are fond of the PQ, I say go for it. Just spent time with it, practicing your skipping. Get it dialed in the way that works best for you.

Some folks say that fishin on a Sunday is a sin, but if a fish bites my line, you know I'm gonna reel him on in!

Skipping is definitely a fun way to fish. It just looks so cool when the jig just flies across the water. I think I will end up getting the PQ at the classic sale in 2014. I have never used one, but I like the looks of it even though it is plain. Looks like a more ruggedly build Tournament pro.

The Pro Qualifier in my opinion is a very good reel at a reasonable cost. While I do not use it for dock skipping (no docks on Amistad to skip) but I do pitch and flip with it. I also have a Curado and Citica. If I need to throw something a country mile it will be the Shimano's, but for flipping and pitching it's the PQ.

At least my boat and truck are paid for, woo hoo!

I have a curado 200DHSV and with that reel I can skip a bait anywhere it is awesome.

The PQ is a great all around reel and would work for skipping docks. I would recommend adding a few bucks and going with an Abu Garcia Revo S. I skip docks easily with all of my Revo's.

I have a pro qualifier in the 6.4:1 gear ratio and the braking system is awesome. I have some high end lews reels and some curados and to be honest, the pq fishes just as good as any reel in my boat. I would highly recommend this reel for any technique.
