Thinkin bout maybe tryin one out and getting some technique down with one, what kind of rod is recomended? I have a abu veritas 7'6 med heavy rod with a abu black max reel baitcasting of course with 30 pound braid. Would this work or will I jack up the rod or reel?

That will work just fine. You don't have to get fancy. It is a grind. Throw it out, wind it back and repeat. I like to drag it with the wind like a C-Rig.

that braid will snap that a rig right off. 30lb braid is equivalent to 8lb mono that's why people use it as a leader on spinning rods.the rods way to light also. It's rated for 1 1/4 oz max of weight. An a rig is a lot more than that. I throw a three wire on a 7'2" heavy and 65lb braid and it's still a workout. 65lb braid or 20-25lb flouro and at least a heavy -ex hev action rod. Also you'll ruin that reel so fast throwing that heavy of a rig on it. It's also more of a lob side arm cast. Trust me you don't want to throw a $30 rig in the lake first cast. Not saying I did that or anything....

Heavy heavy rod, 65lb braid. Reel it slow.

Go to the gym and get your work out on. Then throw a A-Rig.

I use an 8ft skeet reese rod. The most important factor in a rod is lure weight. I recommend 4-6 oz. I have a Muskie rod on order just for the A-rig. but trust me, minimum 4-6 oz. lure weight. minimizes the fatigue and work. Its amazing

I use a Dobyns Champ 795 Swimbait rod with a Lew TP 5.4 reel to reel it. The A rig is a monster and it loads the heck out of that rod which is rated to 5oz.

Also, I'm probably going to replace the reel with something with more line capacity, I can pretty much empty the spool on that TP with 25lb line.

I can promise after a day or two of chunking that rig with that reel the gears will be screaming. The rod will work fine but you will really need a more quality reel to chunk the A-Rig

I also use a Dobyns 795 with a Daiwa Luna round reel and like that set up very much.

Sometimes I will also use my Loomis 8ft Salmon bounce back rod which is rated @ 2-8oz. I also have the Luna on that rod.

The Luna is a round reel with a 5-1 gear ratio.

I agree with needing a heavier rod and a more durable reel. That M/H is going to wear your azz out with a 5 wire rig, maybe not so much with the 3 wire though. The Calcutta's were wearing me out as well although they were meant to handle the load of a 5 wire and heavier swim baits I throw, so I switched over to the BB1's last year and so far they have held up great.

Here's the set up I like using. I use the Abu Garcia Veritas Schooling Rig rod with the Revo Toro Winch reel. This rod is designed for this technique making it easier to handle the a-rigs when casting. The reason I use the Toro winch is because it has a larger spool capable of holding more line so that you don't run out of line when launching those rigs out a long way. I believe that this setup is one that you can use all day without wearing your body out.

I use a dobyns 795 with either a daiwa luna or a lews heavy duty. I actually like the lews heavy duty 6:3.1 better. Both have plenty of line capacity which is a must using 65lb or you will empty the spool when casting. The 6:3.1 seems to be an ideal gear ratio for this technique. I at least use 65 lb braid after breaking 50lb several times and loosing my A-rigs.

I would go with much heavier braid. 50-65#. This is to pull it up and straighten the hooks when you hang up. At $10 a pop or more and 3-7 hooks. It will hang up.
