Thanks to all that are posting up with the explanations-- VERY helpful!

In most of my screen shots I thought I knew what they were from what I saw on the FF, then I caught a bunch of those fish which verified I had guessed correctly. The only way I guessed right was from knowing the habits of different fish at certain times of the year and even in that particular body of water. Also after seeing fish on the FF many times and catching those fish you start to recognize the size and even shapes of their schools or single fish. A school of crappie look much different than a school of hybrids or catfish. Sometimes it's just a guess backed up from a lot of time spent looking at the FF and catching fish.

Awesome pic guys. I hope to have a humminbird soon, I know it will take a lot of practice to be able to learn to read them. I can see everything in the pic but I'm sure reading it on the water as the screen is moving is another story. Here is my question, I might be buying a new boat soon. Is it worth the extra money to buy the 1199 and mount it on a ram mount on top of the console of a center console boat or buy the 999 and flush mount it in the console where it fits (the 999 would replace a Lowrance already flush mounted). There's not enough room for the 1199 to flush mount where they have already installed a Lowrance elite 7 HDI. If I decide to mount a 1199 on top, I will probably leave the Lowrance in there just because of the hole in the console.

I would go with the largest display I have the room and $$ for.

This is a pile of eater blues. The only way I know this is I threw my net in the area and pulled up 3 blues in 1 throw. Since the screenshot was taken I have made some adjustments on the settings and my sidescan looks much better now.

DJ I found I had my contrast way to high. You can see in the screenshot I have it at 81. Now I belive I have it somewhere between 55 and 60. In that shot im also running 455khz. I usually switch it over to 800khz when im in more than 10 feet of water.

Yep, it's all about the settings. Most important is match chart speed to boat speed.

Oh, man! I am wondering two things: 1. How can a person catch the same fish so many times? 2. How can a person even tell it is the same fish?
Awsome, TarponFly!

Lets see some of fish in deep water timber, relating to that structure.

If you catch them twice you have to give them a name
