I have only been fishing saltwater since the first of this year and was buying my live finger mullet at bait shops. A couple of months ago, I started cast netting my own wherever I could find it, usually in drainage ditches and other shallow water areas. Will these same areas hold finger mullet as the water gets colder or should I start looking for deeper places to catch bait? I mainly fish on Bolivar Peninsula and at Rollover Pass. A lot of the bait shops were closed there during the winter earlier this year and I'm trying to make sure I have a place to get bait when I go. I appreciate the help and advice.

Deeper water will be where you should try. This time of year is hard to find any live bait. Especially when the water temps plummet. Most guys go artificial this time of year for that reason.
Man up. Fight the GOOD fight.

when we go down to the san bernard I usually catch finger mullet in the slough by the motel. If its warm for just a few hours the shallow water warms up and the bait stacks up.

This is what ive heard. location is key(marshy and grassy areas)
If you are in a good spot, it only takes a few minutes to catch a bunch of Mudminnows/Killifish/Marshminnows. use a quarter inch mesh trap with 2 doors. Bait with crushed crab or crushed shrimp heads. Fresh is best.
if you see a bunch of them(awesome) throw your trap just up tide of them. Make sure to orient the trap where one of the doors faces down current. wait 5-10 minutes and check the trap. make sure you put the fish in clean water.
Leaving traps out on an outgoing tide will result in dead minnows if the trap becomes exposed.
If the water drops well outside of the grass, the mudminnows will be right along the water line.
Can one become a master at fishing? Pshh... yes...

i stick with the same spot , marsh, mullet are constantly feeding and they tend to stay near food(seaweed) thats why they dont go 10+ miles off, when im throwing in deeper water, i tend to use heavier weight ratios, and for some reason, they always tend to hang around jetties, u might not see them but they swim along the jetties and pick off seaweed from the algae.
