Just discovered this crazy stuff, anyone know of "hobby store" alternative? It's not super expensive but I don't like to wait and don't want to drive to bass pro or cabelas today.

Glad I'm not the only one, yes sort of. It is powder that you heat up a jig head and dip it in this stuff and it coats it like paint but tougher. I thought it was powder coat too and I thought how crazy is it that people are powder coating their jig heads, then I googled it. Just curious if there is an alternative to the one product I have found online.

it's not too crazy. powder coat is pretty easy and cheap to do. it's just dust, oven and electrical ground. it leaves a pretty finish. smooth too. I've heard of people using it to coat 308win bullets.

I think Pearow was using this a few years back.
What Wylie is talking about is a powder that is applied by heating the jighead with a lighter and dipping it into the powder. Works the same as powder coating, without the electrical connection.
I never tried it, but thought the technique was pretty neat.

I have used powder paint "coat" for coloring hooks, also for coating the hook to make a base for spinning deer hair, I dont think I'm gonna paint my bullets with it since it takes at least 250 degrees for 15 minutes or so to set. The little jars sold at sporting goods stores are the same thing they use at industrial powder coat facilities, but you could spend the rest of your life trying to use up 5 gallons of it on jig heads.

I have an old toaster oven that I bake my jigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, etc., after I powder coat them. It makes the paint much tougher.

heres a tip: heat your jig head, hook , etc...slightly prior to "swooshing" thru the powder, to much will yield in a bad result, too little is about the same as none, err on the side of too little. also, It will clog up the eyes in your hooks, use needle old hooke, etc to clear out prior to second heating in oven to "set" paint.

So bass bug,

So the only the alternative is industrial powder coating. So hobby lobby won't have anything and harbor freight has something but it looks like it requires an electrical charge. I guess I'm driving to bass pro or buying some new nail polish.

I bet the harbor freight stuff is the same also, the electrical charge is necessary on to get even coating on larger objects but for jigheads, etc you dont need it..once initial coating is made, it must be baked to cure BUT lead (especially dirty lead with tin)will melt if it gets too hot, so I alwasy went for lower heat & longer time, ie; 250 for 20 minutes

Or if you want to really go loko you could always anodize. Anodizing is just as easy and probably even cheaper (afterall, knowledge is free!). No, you don't have to buy any "anodizing specialty kits" or anything. All you need is a few acidic ingredients and a little knowledge of electrolysis and electrochemistry. It completely blows my mind how many people are ripped off by companies convincing people it's an expensive procedure worth investing in. You could probably anodize a gallon of aluminum parts for less than $10.

But it only works with aluminum so there's one drawback.

I have powder painted jig heads, hooks, and bead chain for years. I have a fluid bed which helps get a more even coat of paint on the objects. I heat them over an alcohol stove, swoosh them in the powder, tap off the excess, and they are ready to go. On some of my bigger jig heads I will bake them in my toaster oven just to make the paint harder for the bigger more aggressive fish. You can buy the powder paint at Barlows Tackle, Cabelas, Bass Pro, and some Gander Mountain stores.
