My son and I went fishing and caught a 29" drum, but I realized that we had forgotten our stringer. By the time we packed up and got to the closest store for ice, about 1.5 hours had gone by. I wanted to release him but my son was too excited and wanted to bring him home. Is it still safe to eat this fish?

Thats a tough one. I would clean it and make sure you have no really "fishy" smell. Be sure to clean him about 6" up from the tail.. Most of the worms are at the base of the tail.

Yea I cleaned it and froze the filets but now I'm a bit worried about getting the family sick. I didn't smell anything out of the ordinary. I did see some worms only on one side.

If you are concerned about it now, you will never feel right about eating it. Try to show your son a good way to use the fish without just trashing (fish is good fertilizer) and it will help teach him not to waste fish and game.
The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

When fish spoils it develops an ammonia smell quickly. If it doesn't have that smell it is good.

if the belly was buldged when you were filleting it it is no good, what temp was the fish in during the time period,

I agree with JP. You will never feel comfortable with it but there are other uses for it. A drum that big even if fresh is not the best table fare.
At least my boat and truck are paid for, woo hoo!

Thanks for the responses. From what you guys are explaining, I believe the fish is ok but I know for a fact now that I will never do that again. Next time the fish will be released to fight another day. My son has been explained this and he totally understands why? I think he will enjoy watching the fish swim away, and cherish what god has given us (nature).
