About this time of year I stick a tube of liquid nails in my hull. It is so flammable that you can pull a water soaked log out of the lake squirt that liquid nails on it and get it burning. Good idea. Hand sanitizer works the same way. I don't know if its AS flammable, but being alcohol based, it will definitely burn. Hand sanitizer won't burn long enough to start wet wood but it will get damp or dry wood going.

Good post, Josh. Timely. Best firestarter (logistically) are cotton balls soaked in vaseline. You can stuff a dozen of them in a waterproof case the size of pill bottle. Second best kept secret is a set of dry clothes in a dry bag. Not sure why, but a lot of people just don't bother to take them. I used to be one of the people, until I needed it and didn't have it.

Watched a vid a while back. Guy was stuffing sections of large dia. plastic straws with cotton fire starter and heat sealing them. Set the section of straw on fire and get it going. Great post Josh and others. Jeaux

Don't forget your old plastic baits make a great firestarter. Just one brush hog placed in a small container will burn very hot for over 10 minutes and almost impossible to blow out by wind.

The liquid nails isn't for starting a campfire. It is for starting a bonfire outta water logged wood. If I ever have to bust out the liquid nails will be because I'm about to loose a leg and a hand. It is for those times when you must build a fire so big somebody will see it from across the lake and call the fire dept.

I watched a series of videos done by Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht who researches cold water survival. I thought it was very enlightening. This version has some fluff in it, but it has some good info. Glad we don't have to worry about falling though ice very often. http://youtu.be/5gOW8ZaYqHA

Christmas is right around the corner and if you want to get something that will extend your time and comfort on the water, get a drytop. With waterproof rubber gaskets around wrist, neck, and waist, you'll stay warm and dry in almost any conditions you'll encounter throughout the winter and it will come in handy during the rest of year if you fish through torrential downpours.
