I have heard there are guides who will take you fishing and teach you about the new fishing electronics. I like to fish for crappie. so I think it would be best to hire a crappie guide but learning the electronics is the most important. I would be happy to learn about the electronics even if it meant not fishing but I would think you would do some fishing to learn about the electronics. also I would be glad to hire someone who is not a guide but someone who would be willing to teach me about the electronics. I live in Crowley. I have a hummingbird 768 but I am going to buy one with side imaging, gps, color. either a 598,or 998. thanks.

I just did that very thing and thankfully guys on here told me to talk to David at "Shut up and Fish". Dont buy anything until you talk to him trust me. HE will also get you the videos to watch. I had my 998 installed and running in about an hour and half and my life has not been the same!

You can probably find someone on the forum with a similar product that would take you out in their boat or maybe use yours and show you enough to get started. Also get the instructional videos and youtube has a lot of good videos that will help.
Ernest would be your best bet but, he is cutting back and you might have to wait awhile to book a trip with him.

If you want to make a trip down to central texas, around waco area, I can help you with the humminbird. I have developed a system of using the sonar that is very effective, and have taught quite a few folks how to use thier units effectively. Many folk get the units and ride around all day pushing buttons not really having a plan, and dont get the most out of thier units. I recommend to leave your poles at home for the first few trips while you learn .

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Call basspro garland marine dept. and ask for Doug. All the big boys go to him for all questions. I believe he charges 30hr and will show you everything you could possibly want to know about your electronics on the water. When you call they'll give you his schedule so you can go meet him. He's the guru. Take a pen and pad. I've seen lines of guides 7 deep gladly waiting just to talk with him.

I agree that Doug Yates of BPS Garland is very good explaining electronics. Met him about a year ago looking to replace an old locator. We have had many contacts some by email. He travels some , but will respond to you. Good luck!

Using the site for a while...this is really great to share fishing ideas and success with others.

If I were wanting someone to go personally in my boat, I would go with Doug Yates, Ernest Paty, or Chuck Rollins. If I couldn't get one of these guys, I would try the CD's and try to figure it out on my own.

Doug and Ernest will both give you help over the phone, once you have a little idea what is going on. Both great guys.

Keith

998 hands down. Bigger screen is the best investment. Look at my post shut up and fish. Thats my unit. I did very little adjusting to it. Bought it from David installed it my self and hit the water. Found and caught fish!
