I'm wondering if anyone is catching huge fish mainly gar or striper out of a kayak. If so, it would be way cool if I could join you with my camera and maybe get your picture in Kayak Angler.

Hey dosko! I do not know of anyone crazy enough to catch a gar (trophy gar) from a kayak, but my friend and I are probably some of the few! We have caught a few smaller gar 2-3 foot range and we have had some giant ones on. I fish from a 10 foot lifetime kayak (sit in) and my friend has a 12 foot pelican (sit on). We have had a few giant ones we have hooked in to, we are in a honey hole, filled with giant gar! It is just a matter of time until we get one! I've had several gar above the 5-6 foot range come up to take a breather right next to my kayak. It will be a adrenaline rush when we get one! The gars bite slows down a bit during the winter so we will probably start heading back out this next spring/summer, but still might try it out a few more times this year! I looked at some of your photos on your website they are great by the way! wink

Thanks Collin, Yak Angler is looking for a bad [censored] shot by the end of December for the cover. We can plan a trip together or you can just give me a heads up and I'll try and meet you guys out there. What area are you located?
Should be fun.

Its kindof late in the season for huge gar. Summer time...I'm in I am happy to fight as big a fish as you want. Catfish is what time it is now.

Right on guys. I appreciate the tips. If you have any trips that might produce the WOW factor for the cover of a magazine before the end of December hit me up. A giant cat might do the trick. One other option might be to try and get into some reds on Fairfield. Any other ideas? Send my way. And thanks for the input.

I've caught both from my kayak.
40" striper

82" alligator gar

I've caught a few 40" reds out of Fairfield, bud sadly those days are over thanks to the fish kills. TPWD no longer stocks them as a result.
