How in the blazes do you catch these blasted crappie? I tried jigging but I guess I don't jig well... People tied up across the creek from me just snatchin' em out of the water...

Right now they are holding tight to cover. You are probably seeing guys fishing known or planted structure. You can always sink a tree and work it in a few weeks or use sonar to find where they're at. As it gets colder the shad will start moving into shallower water and so will predatory fish.

Or you can fish the spots they do when they leave.

There is no real trick. Just sonar, study and finding schools.

When you learn, will you tell me?

I fished my slip and a vacant slip today, hoping to catch some crappie. I fished with jigs, lures and finally minnows.

I have a mercury vapor underwater light in my slip, green LEDs around the edge of the slip and have dropped three porcupine fish attractor balls into the slip to try to make the crappie feel at home.

I didn't catch anything until afer 6:00 P.M. Then I caught:

5 11"-12" large mouth bass
1 14" large mouth bass
1 15.5" large mouth bass
1 17" large mouth bass
1 19" large mouth bass
1 23" large mouth bass

4 White bass 12"-14"

1 crappie 5.5"

This might be considered good if I was fishing for bass. But I was fishing for crappie so it wasn't very good.

So where are the crappie? They don't bite for me on the lake, they don't bite for me in my slip.

This makes three weeks now that I have caught almost no crappie. August, September, early October I was catching large numbers of crappie from my slip, through most were too small to keep.

Now I'm not even catching the small ones at my slip.

So could you tell me the secret as soon as you learn it?

cut you several large handfuls of willows ....
tie them to a few bricks .....
sink them in that area ....
return in a day or 2 ....
that might just do it for ya ....

Man I got the same problem. I need to improve my crappie fishing. I'm always ending up with catfish, bass or snags when I try and sometimes I'll leave with 1 or 2 crappie. Then I'll do research and watch videos and people say it's so easy that kids can do it and I really feel bad haha.

I'm in my second childhood. Does that mean I can start catching them?

Or does that mean I'm so far from being a child that I will never catch them again? frown

Maybe I should give up crappie fishing and start fishing for bass. I could then brag in the bass forum and start showing pictures of all the bass I am catching. smile

Generally it means you again have the time to do all the things you want to do. But then you find you are too tired and hurt too much to do all the things you want to do. frown

Like everything it's LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. I've fished structure where if your not in a 2' x 2' spot with your jig you couldn't buy a bite.

I just got skunked in a location I KNOW hold lots of crappie. The sonar showed them, just no nibble today. Sometimes that's just the way it goes.

And ditto on the 2x2 spot. Crazy but true

if you fish in an area where crappie are holding and you use jigs or minners (thats Texas for minnows) you will catch some. if you fish for a while and dont catch any then move on to another spot. keep movin till you find them. you catch a couple then fish it pretty hard cause they are in the area. they dont travel alone. good luck and go get them
