I buy left handed baitcasting reels, throw right handed, and reel left handed. Seems perfectly natural to me because growing up in the 50's, many bass fishermen used spinning gear. I used left-handed Mitchell spinning reels.
In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

I throw with my right hand and switch to crank the reel with the same hand, sometimes the switch all happens before the bait hits the water.

I am like most of you cast right, switch, crank right. My 2 grandsons ages 11 & 13 started using baitcasters 2-3 years ago. Oldest is lefty he uses right hand crank/cast left, youngest is right handed and does just the opposite. They figured this out on their own----decided it was easier. They can both handle a baitcaster as well as anyone I have fished with in my 60+ years.

If your fishing cranks or spinnerbaits theres nothing wrong with switching over. Most of the time the switch over is done while the bait is still in flight. To me if your flipping or pitching reeds or grass and the chance of a big un loading up and you not being ready to set the hook because the reel is in the wrong hand then get a left hand reel just for this style of fishing.

I used to do that until I went through a big topwater phase and needed my right hand coordination to control my bait on top. My left hand just couldn't do what my brain told it. The human body is a funny thing! If its workin, keep it. If it aint, change it!

If I tried retraining to be more ambidextrous, it would be to relieve fatigue. And that is why it's important to learn to cast left handed. I've always disagreed with if "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". You can always improve on whatever it is you do. Casting left handed helps when you get fatigued, but it also helps when there are multiple people in the boat or when you're fishing in tight quarters.

I'm left handed and I cast with my left arm and reel with my right. No switching hands. I'm like someone else that posted. I grew up with spinning tackle and never changed. When I first started bass fishing with baitcast reels I don't think there even were left handed reels. If there were, I did not know about them.

I buy lefty reels (I am right handed) to take the pressure off my left arm. I use both...mixing it up, not to tire one arm more than the other.
Plus if you are right handed you are more likely to be stronger on your right side...makes sense to hold the rod with your right hand/arm.
