Calaveras use to be a very busy subject on this forum, but no more. Why ? I must admit that I don't go as much as I did, because of health issues. The times I have gone were not like the old days..haven't caught a striper in 2 years. Maybe it's just me.

I was wondering the same thing Roger, DNAHOGHUNTER has a great YouTube channel showing plenty of reds and channel cats being pulled from there. I myself plan on doing some night time fall fishing there as soon as i get everything ready on my new/used boat.

Don't know if it's just folks not reporting much, but it seems there are still fish being caught.
Another reason is that it's deer season and it usually is traditionally slow this time of year as far as fishing interest is concerned, except for the few die hards.

I know that when I drive out to the lease during the week (I'm retired now) I noticed the other day there were only four boat trailered vehicles in the parking area at Braunig, and that was on a friday. I was a little amazed, or maybe shocked, so maybe the old lakes aren't what the used to be.

I know they don't get the attention they did back in the day, so maybe it's tougher, but I'm looking forward to the spring white bass spawn in January, February and March, down on the Nueces river now that the Lake CC is full once again.

I know there has to be at lest a couple of fish left in Calaveras...I turned a few big reds & cats loose this summer. Should have grown bigger by now unless someone else caught them. I have noticed that there aren't near the Calaveras threads that there use to be. I'm sure "jimbo" remembers those days. I guess maybe "times have changed".

I was just kidding, notice the smilie? smile The cats have not changed much at cally, might not be quite as many, but on average the size is better. The Blues are just getting going and will be biting well through the winter months.

I was at Braunig Friday bass fishing. No bites, I did notice 64 degree water temps.I guess they aren't running enough to warm up the water?

I could tell you had a grin parttime, but I haven't fished canyon in a long time...sure have caught some big stripers out of there. Calaveras is just so convient...30 minutes & I am on the water.
I have fished Calaveras ever since it was built..the stocking of stripers, reds & then corvina. Those were exciting times.

Not sure I remember correctly, but there once were crappie in Cali right? I'm talking back in the early to mid 80's.

Braunig & Calaveras were both great bass & crappie lakes. I have caught a lot of crappie off the crappie wall. Believe it or not, Calaveras was once rated as one of the top bass lakes in Texas.

It's a shame there are no more crappie in those lakes. You wouldn't be able to drag me away if there were. maybe one day they'll be able to restock the lakes with Crappie

Back in the late 70's & 80's, both lakes were inundated with huge schools of tilapia..(I believe they came with the pumping of water out of the San Antonio river into both lakes)the tilapia then destroyed most of the vegetation in sight. P & W solution..stocking stripers & redfish. they ate well & couldn't tell the difference between tilapia & crappie. This is the history of Calaveras crappie as I remember it. Maybe some of the old timers can add to it.

Tilapia were purposely introduced to both lakes to control the vegetation that grew in both warm water lakes.
