Be careful out there on Hubbard. Current lake level of 428.52 which means it is lower than it has ever been since they filled it so all kind of new things are going to be showing up. I hit a stump a month ago and tore up a $1300 prop bent my propshaft and ripped about a 10 ft chunk out of my hull. With that being said I can't wait till the winter bite starts!!

I can attest to that. Saw more timber yesterday then ever before. Rain Rain come today and don't go away until Hubbard is full.

How did you find out that they are letting water out?

Here u go:

http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/reports/fish.htm

And since nobody asked, here's my $.02

They've been letting out at least 36 cfps since at least June...maybe longer than that. And I'll be honest...that makes the fishing tough. Fish don't like that water bring released. Almost all the fish for the last 3 months I've cleaned have been skinny, skinny fish. Very little shad in their bellies. We still have a very healthy shad population but the fish just aren't half as interested as they have been in years past.

I'm not saying they won't feed it's just a little tougher than it should be. Just think back to the summer schooling action. Does anybody remember seeing it as sketchy as it was this year? I sure don't. Even the best string of consistent schooling action was poor compared to years past. The shad were there...the fish just weren't interested. IMHO they just eat what they have to in order to survive...but they aren't gorging and thriving...just surviving.

And with the lake level being so different from where it's been in years past, our entire pattern is different. The same deep structure that was at 24ft last year is now at 28-30ft. That means the fish aren't going to be there when you think they should be there. It's like fishing an entirely new lake. You have to try new places constantly to make things happen.

But the good news is that it prob won't get too much worse. We'll survive thumb

I think that Bombay has hit the nail precisely on the head. Lake Belton has the exact same situation. The Corp is still letting water out and the active fish are not in their usual haunts. Have you ever gotten skinny when there is plenty of food to eat. I never have and I don't think that the fish have either. The dropping lake level is having an impact on the forage population. The problem will be hard to fix. Food for the forage fish is directly related to the nutrients in the water system. When we have a dry year, there is less run off and less overall supply of the essential water soluble components that make the minnows grow. We need help from Mother Nature and we need it now.

To put the math to what Paul posted... They are currently letting out 46 cfs (cubic feet per second). That doesn't sound like much. That translates into 344.1 gallons per second
20,646.24 gallons a minute
1,238,774.11 gallons an hour
29,730,578.69 gallons a day
That's a lot of water. Lavon and most other lakes in the Trinity Basin are not letting out any.

Here's a good explanation on some of what they are doing. Mentions the water gets pumped back to Lavon. Don't see a lot of the effects on Lavon if that is happening:

The problem is how people use the water!!
And don't forget not one lake in this state was ever made to use as a recreational lake all where made to supply drinking water end of story.
I think at some point next couple years powers to be going have a choice to make save lavon and hubbard by releasing water from texhoma down the creek channel like they used to are loose the power plant and drinking water because of the zebra mussels.
I know the pumps at the power plant gotta be close to being high and dry.

The pipeline should be close being done but like you said it's going right to the water plant.
Tell you this much water level ever gets high again when they open the gates on lavon hubbard going have stuff floating everywhere going up the river going be very scary.

Surprisingly, most water from Texas lakes is used for agriculture. Less than half is for municipal usage but that varies by what part of the state you are talking about. Lavon is for flood control first and foremost.

As far as Texoma.... My guess is that they aren't going to let any of that water out until they figure out the zebra mussel thing a little bit.

I agree with you 110% on getting better at how we use the water.

There are farmers down stream that are flooding their rice fields for weed control! bang
