I have always been a structure kind of guy, flipping and pitching to timber, docks, brush piles, etc... But I am just now starting to get into fishing lakes with lots of grass, heavily. All I've fished around grass with success has been frogs, skinny dippers slow rolled and I've tried punching grass but with little success.

What kind of tips do y'all have for fishing grass and what are some of y'all's favorite techniques?

I prefer reaction bites in grass, big jigs, thumper single blade SB, chatterbaits, but cranks work well too. Just pop em through, and wait for the strike.

I fish grass almost exclusively. It really is a numbers game. But its a really easy method. I drop that 11/2oz jig let it hit bottom and stay for a second or 2 and reel up and do it again a few feet away from my last punch. Repete about 1440 times. Almost 100% the fish is going to thump it on the initial drop. Very seldom if any this year did I actually stroke one into biting. This summer it was all about a jig with craw trailer, now they want nothing but a jig with that big magnum fluke. Hard to imagine it make a difference when they are deep down in dark grass but it does.
Just keep on punching that heavy bullet style bait it will pay off

This will help you get that huge fish you have been looking for. Nothing will beat it. It works everywhere, shallow mat but best on the deepest grass you can find. You got to keep going until you find that sweet spot, pitch out the marker and circle it looking for others because they will be grouped up under the hollow.
You must consentrate on what other people do not do. Knowing how to fish deep grass is one of them. Especially getting in the matted areas. If the wind is blowing you can get in there on the upwind side; put the trolling motor up and big motor up and walk the boat accross the mat by rocking the boat from side to side.
I have fished the deep grass at Lake Amistad for 30 years. In the heat of the day they are burried up in the grass.
Here is how you get them out:
Rig a heavy drop shot rig:
5.0 heavy super line hook. Tied on 50# braid. Use a Palamar knot. Leave the tag end at 5 inches long. Tie a 1 oz. weight to the tag end. I just tie a knot in the end of the tag, then use a overhand slip knot to attach the weight. It doesn't take much to keep it on. When I am fishing grass and hardwoods and it gets hung on the wood I can pull it off and come out with the hook and fish. You understand that the hook is about 4 to 5 inches above the weight, so the tails of the bait will hang down and cover the weight.
Use a Gene Lawrue Hoo Daddy Jr. in Watermelon Neon.
It will drop in the grass and come out of the grass with no hang-ups.
Fish vertical to 20% in front of the boat. Directly over the bait is best on the deepest grass. Drop it in slowly and soft so it is traveling slowly when it touches the bottom. The Bass hate anything sneeking in on them. Hold it there with a tight line for about 5 seconds without any movement. They don't want it bouncing up and down. This gives them time to swim through the hollow under the grass and nail the bait.
Vertical presentation and moving along the outer edge of the grass line, making pitches out in front of the boat so by the time it gets to the bottom you are directly over the bait for the hookset.
HAVE FUN!!

When I first started fishing grass, I didnt understand what a hydrilla bed looked like under the surface. I would see thick mats on the surface, or just under the surface, and could not imagine how fish could be in the middle of that stuff swimming around and feeding. Finally I saw an underwater video of grass beds and I finally got it.

Hydrilla, like any plant needs, sunlight to grow. So when it starts growing well the upper canopy blocks light which causes lower parts of the plant to thin out and eventually disappear. So when you look at a thick, well established hydrilla bed, it looks totally different under the water. Inside the bed it is usually pretty open, and has a protected cavern full of bait and usually fish. Once I got a picture in my mind of what was really going on I started catching more fish with many different techniques.

Native Texas guys probably knew this all along, but it took an underwater camera to educate me.

I was just like you but within the last year I started flippin grass more and more. I would go out and just flip all day and I finally started catchin fish and learning where to fish. Not all the grass holds fish and you sometimes just have to cover a few miles to find them. Other than punchin, my go to is a fluke or a money minnow. Those three catch fish anyday, anytime for me but mainly cause I have the confidence to throw them all day.

there are lots of choices, but I prefer spinnerbaits, senkos, chatterbaits, lipless crankbaits, frogs, flukes, jigs and jerkbaits
