I took the wifey over to a lil fishin hole under a bridge on the Lampasas on Friday, and there was too much water flowing and it was too muddy to catch anything, but we found something cool:

These lil things were growing down right by the river. At first, I thought maybe they were watermelons... but I got out my pocketknife to cut it open, and it had a really hard rind, and didn't look like a watermelon at all

Anyone know what these are? maybe some sort of squash or gourd?

Getting skunked happens. bang Sometimes water conditions just make it impossible and difficult to fish. juggle At least you were out there enjoying the outdoors. thumb Oh yea. There is always next time. fish

Side Note: As for the plant. I have know idea what it is. noidea If that would have been a fish you would have already had it identified in this section. thumb I am sure there is someone out there who will know what it is. eeks

BAF, you got that right, I definitely enjoyed the fresh air regardless... and it is always fun when I talk the wife into coming with me (especially cause she usually finds herself a big fish or two... that girl is my lucky rabbit foot...lol)

I figured I would post it in this section though, cause I think there seems to be more folks fishin in rivers in this section than anywhere else on the forum....

It would be cool if they opened a dedicated river fishing section on the main page!!

I think they are called "gourds"! We had them at my old deer lease!

Welcome "CollinM" to the Forum. You picked a super section to post in. Looking forward to reading more of your post. cheers

Side Note: "Colorado Transplant": Getting skunked is all part of fishing. It happens to me several times a year. Like you say. It is just getting out there that counts. thumb

The gourd looks like musk melon (cucunis melon) or buffalo gourd (Cucurbita foetidissima)to get a beter Id go the Texas AM plant web site and look at the plants; the melons all look simular, just don't eat them till you are sure what they are.I know a few young daring teens that made poor choices on "baby watermelons" back in the day.It did kill us; just made for long hours in one room, with three fighting to get in.

Lol well in that case, I am glad it didn't look anything like a watermelon when I cut it open, cause I was definitely gonna taste it if it was indeed a melon...

the flesh on the inside was white, and it had a whole mess of seeds inside... It wasn't solid like a squash/cucumber...
