[quote=cove_crawler]I've got an SI question. Say you were idling in 40ft of water looking for fish suspending at about 20 feet of water. Let's also say that you don't have much confidence in identifying fish on side imaging when they graph over the imaging of the bottom. Could you set your SI range to 45 ft on booth sides so that the screen shows the deep dark part as the biggest part of the screen? Would the suspended fish just show up in the dark part, making them easier to identify? [/quote
yes. but if you cant see the fish on side imaging, your settings are not correct, try AMBER 2 and try adjusting your contrast to make the fish pop out. the trick is to try and darken the background and brighten the fish,.
COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

select a voltage readout box on your unit to show voltage, and see what voltage you are getting to your unit while on the water at all times. Also you can power up your unit, disconnect it from the bracket but not the power cable block, and shake it, to see if it shuts off.

Ps. Extra transducer is mounted inside on the hull

Doug Are you going to be at the Fishing For Freedom this year? I bought a 998c last Sept from David at Shut up and fish, really enjoyed the unit. Noticed initially that when I hit very rough water the unit would power down. Since I know the lake pretty well never bothered me, only use it when actually fishing. Lately the unit has been powering down a low speeds with little or no rough water. Today it shut down while trolling at low speeds on water that was like glass. I have checked the power connections, no issues there, the battery if fully charged. Is this normal for a one year old unit to just stop working. Thanks Chris I'm heading out this week back to Mississippi for the Final BASS Open and will not be able to make that event. No. That is normally a sign of power supply. Are you using a glass bulb style fuse versus blade style? Also check the cable collector to make sure the power supply is fully seated in the connector. Might try pushing the pins in opposite direction slightly that will provide a better contact. If not call HB Customer service the unit may need to be looked at.

Ps. Extra transducer is mounted inside on the hull If you have the Y Cable this will explain better. http://youtu.be/BCuCOPhyGZs I'm not sure how it could work off plane unless you do not have the Y Cable hooked up or you have a transducer switch then need to switch each time you get on plane.

Save it as one of your 3 Favorites and with one button push you are ready to go when on plane, I would save another for SI when you are off plane. Here is my OnPlane Screen I use most.

What's the difference using a bulb style vs blade style? The spade type makes a more solid connection in the holder and is less prone to corrosion. It doesn't have a tension spring either to conduct current or get weak.

I just baught a boat that came with a Humminbird 997, it does not read when I am running across the lake, I am told that I need a high speed transducer and it hooks along with the side/down imaging transducer? Is there a high speed transducer and what is the part number for it. thank you

Is there a high speed transducer and what is the part number for it. thank you The standard transducer for the 997 is the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T and it does Side Imaging, Down Imaging, 2D sonar and temp. It can give you on-plane depth readings IF installed correctly for your hull. The BEST installation for a thin hull fiberglass high performance boat is a properly installed shoot-thru 2D transducer XP 9 20. When using that transducer, you connect it and the transom mounted SI transducer to the display with the AS SIDB Y cable. That cable disconnects the 2D crystal in the SI transducer and connects the shoot-thru 2D transducer in its place. The combination of the two functions the same as the single SI transducer.

If you have a metal hull, then there are a couple of other choices for on-plane depth readings.
