I'm leaving tomorrow to go fish the BASS Open at Jackson. I had a room booked for my wife and I at a motel in North Jackson. I read that some low life scum killed one of our fellow fishermen while trying to steal tackle. This happened in the area where my room was booked. I cancelled this reservation and made one in Canton, Mississippi which is 15 miles or so further north. Does anyone know if this area is safe?

From an earlier thread on the same subject.

I would encourage you to do an internet search for "Canton, MS crime" and look at the crime rate there. It is NOT low. Be sure and look at a site with current crime statistics. The "city-data.com" site is the most current I could find quickly. The Ridgeland/Madison area is much better than Canton, according to the brief research I did.

I would stay in Madison or Flowood (preferably Madison) - both nice areas and not far at all from Ross Barnett. I would not stay in Canton.

I am new to writing on this forum and am a resident of Brandon MS which is due east of jackson. I would like to say that this is a terrible thing and I fell sorry for the people of Jackson. I spend as little time there as humanly possible because crime has gotten so out of hand. I would like to add that areas in the counties of Rankin to the east and Madison to the north are excellent cities. The are closest to the Ross Barnett are Brandon,Flowood,Pearl and Pelahatchie in Rankin County and Ridgeland, and Madison in Madison County. The Flowood, Brandon, Pearl and Madison police departments are known in the area for being tough on criminals and they are aware of this. I can only hope that the event goes on without further incident and though I did not know the victim my thoughts are with his wife and family.

Clinton or the Pearl / Flowood areas are a much better choice than anywhere in the Jackson city limits. The Motel 6 is just minutes away from the Madison city limits where the incident with Jimmy occurred. Please be careful out there.

We have a plant over in Jackson and I always stay in the Brandon area...its close to the lake and there are some hotels there that I stay at that I've never had issues with theft.
Jackson is no different than a lot of the big cities in todays America...

Keep on topic and off politics please.

Problem is, CHLs are state issued, so having one from TX doesn't mean nothin once you cross the state line...

Agreed.. however, I will trump that withe federal law that says I have teh right to keep and bear arms!!! Which means I can do that in any state, at any time, without having a CHL.

Thank you for the welcome. The cities surrounding the reservoir are nice and relatively crime free, family orriented cities. I wish that the cloud of this crime was not there to overshadow this event for fear that it might not return. The fishing is tough enough on the reservoir without having to dodge bullets. But as I have read on this forum many times crime is rampant in society today even in rural areas such as lake fork. Again prayers and thoughts to the family.

+1 you can check online and/or call the state you're visiting for validation.

Miss is listed as a reciprocity CHL carry state with TX. You can legally carry there.
