I have better luck with the popper. When's best time to use a spook over the popper?

I like a popper if the water is dead calm and a spook if there's a little breeze. Also a popper if its a slow bite and a spook if they're chasing shad as I work a spook fast and popper slow.

I run a spook over grass in open water, and when it's breezy, i just cover ground quick with it. I throw a popper and prop bait to targets, hard cover, particularly on sunny calm days when fish are tight to cover.

I like a popper if the water is dead calm and a spook if there's a little breeze. I'm just the opposite - give me the spook in calm water for a quieter presentation. I love the popper in choppy water and a buzz bait in the bigger waves. Work the buzz bait with a variable speed making it rise and fall.

+1 I have more confidence in a popper, and end up throwing it in almost all situations anyway (my walk the dog retrieve is no bueno) I throw the spook in calm water because it's the only time I can walk the dog to my liking.

I catch more on a buzz bait than the other 2 combined.
But I like the spook for fall fishing more than a popper, works great when you find a bunch of 2-4lb fish chasing shad.
Don't worry about the mule, just load the cart

I always do better on a spook, side to side action.

We are usually fishing lots of hydrilla tops, so the exposed hooks are out. Toss a frog 1st, buzz 2nd, then a weedless spook. If open water, I like a slow walked spook when the bass are pressured or winds are calm. Arbogast hula popper when I am trying to draw something in with a little noise.

If you want to practice your spook walk, use a 6' to a 6'6" MH rod and do the same twitch as you use with the popper. I would suggest using braid as your short twitch will walk the spook tightly.
Practice makes perfect. Slow, erratic twitches catch big fish too.

Poppers like Yellow Magics or RICO's on calm days and spooks or sammys on windier days works best for me. Always seem to catch bigger fish on the spooks or sammys though.
