Maybe this question has been asked b4 . Not looking for any kinda friction towards this topic . But is Bachman lake worth a shot ? I have a 5 year old daughter she wants to fish so bad an plus catch fish which we all know its called fishing not catching so patience is not a in a childs way of thinking . I'm tryin very hard an shes learning... bachman is very close to where I live i've taken her a few times we fished up around the whataburger around the bridge we have caught one or two blue gill but thats about it . Anyone have any pointers for this lake or tactics that would work ? Heck If i could get them to bite i'd hook um an let her reel them in . The brush piles look fairly good around there but no luck so far an a few spots have bums living under the bridges so when going I do carry cuz i've heard a few stories about safety . Hope i'm not stepping on anyones toes or going outside the lines by asking . This is my first post here as well . Thanx Guys

Welcome to the forum.
Bachman can certainly be challenging, maybe not ideal for a young fisherman. Small inline spinners, small spinnerbaits, and small rattletraps can be good from the bank. Shiners/minnows under a bobber would work well.

I'll send you a pm of places near Bachman that might be easier on a child's patience.

I would go to the other end, by the rowing barn. Water is usually clearer on that end usually, just a little tricky navigating by foot. Southwest corner. Spinnerbait usually gets a few bites...Whiterock is ok too when the weather cools down.

If you're just wanting to get your little girl into some fish you can't really beat a good ole night crawler fished under a small bobber. Use a very small hook, like a #8 aberdeen hook, a small split shot a few inches above that and a bobber clipped on about 2 feet above the hook. Make sure you're using a small enough bobber that the sunfish can pull it under. You'll catch a lot of small fish but your daughter will have a blast.

"Life is a matter of luck and the odds of success are in no way enhanced by extreme caution." - Erich Topp, German U-boat Commander, 1943.

When in doubt, set the hook.

Even better for bream is Euro Larva or larvae of various insects. You can find them for sale in a lot of the bigger pet stores.

Bluegill and other sunfish can not resist them wiggling on a hook. They are very hardy. You can often use to catch several bream before you need to change the bait.

Euro Larva is what I use for my grandkids. I buy them a thousand at a time online but I have been told that Petsmart carries. I haven't tried so I don't know if it is true or not.

I have also seen them at a few marinas for $5.00 per hundred so it is much cheaper buying them online than at the marina.

Hey Beard! I was in the same spot as you...my 7 to girl outta nowhere asked to go fishing. Now we are "hooked"! She catches lots of bass and cats. Your best luck is to fish community ponds. They are usually safe, clean and stocked by TPWD. Not to mention bathrooms for the young ladies.

We caught a 5 lb LMB at a pond in Red Oak. I also take them to N. Oak Cliff at Lake Cliff park. Despite the rep Oak Cliff gets, this place is nice. We cath lots of small LMB, bluegill and cats there.

TPWD maintains a list of community ponds as well as stocking history. It's an invaluable source. Best of luck buddy!

Can agree with Ram4Bass that some of the community lakes are really nice and probably right up your alley. I'm just getting back into this wonderful activity and every time I've gone to Bachman I can see them, they nibble here and there, but I'm not up to the challenge yet. I'm basically still trying to explore nice places to practice, and two that I found might be a great fit for taking out young anglers - both are in University Park too, so family friendly attitudes overall I think. The first is Curtis Park, very nice pond that I think is mostly stocked with catfish. It's off Lovers Lane. The second is just a little ways from that, Williams Park. It's on University Boulevard and across the street from a fire station - I was really surprised how big the pond is there, and it was good to me and at least let me pull out a really pretty bluegill which resulted in a fun little "Oh I actually caught one! Cool! Spines! Ouch! Back in the water for you fellow!" exchange so I didn't get a picture. Hope these help a little!
