That's exactly what I was wondering about also. Maybe the Mend-It stuff has some scent added to it, but straight PVC glue is pretty stout!

I understand what you mean and I agree with you for the most part, but what about those $4 or $5 a piece hollow body swimbaits that you caught one fish on and now you can't get it to stay all the way up on the jig head or there is a small rip in the back where the hook comes out? That is what I am most interested in. I feel like repairing those swimbaits could pay for itself in one day on the water.

I will glue the nose on those if it rips the screw lock out but if a fish rips the tail off it's done. I don't have time to be gluing baits. I'm on a budget just like everyone else, but I'm not going to glue baits together unless I'm down to my last one and it's the only thing they are biting on. That glue stinks and I'm sure it tastes funny.

Not to take away from the OP.....It is a very good tip and it does work so thank you for the tip. It's just not something I choose to do.

You can do the same thing with a soldering iron by heating up both sides of the bait a little (it wont take much) and pressing them back together. Ripped baits work the same way too. You can even splice different color combinations or styles together to make custom plastics. I've spent hours playing around with different combinations making trailers for jigs and creatures.

Well, certainly an important consideration, but have you ever smelled liquid PVC before they cure it?? That's what plastic baits are made of. Smell PVC glue once it dries and tell me what you smell.

As far as the comment about letting out the secret on Mend-it. I haven't used their product, so I can't comment on it one way or the other. I haven't read the ingredients and I'm not a chemist, so I don't know if their stuff is the same as PVC cement.

What I do know is that soft baits are made of PVC, and the common big box hardware store PVC Cement seems to work well.

Will it have any effect on how fish interact with a bait? Don't know, but I can say that I also did a test on the smell of the PVC cement after it was dry on a surface other than a soft plastic where I wasn't smelling the actual bait - I detected no odor at all.....but then again, I'm not a fish, so...just sayin'.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting on the water looking like a darn fool.

Great post. I've used a lighter many times to mend a plastic bait and it works.

I've got enough plastics to last the rest of my life without repairing them. Since none of my relatives fish and my friends that do fish have a lifetime supply of their own, it is my goal to use as much of my inventory up before my dirt nap. Besides, better to spend your time reading books/watching tutorial videos than rebuilding plastics. JMO. Some people just enjoy tinkering with lures. I get it.

I use mend it and does smell bad. That said, I use scent to cover it up. Gotta try this soon. The lighter trick works too but if you go overboard melting, you can ruin your bait if you are not careful.

If you get bit much at all you can go through probably 10 lures in a day at 40 to 50 cents a lure. It's real easy to sack them up and take a few minutes to repair them afterwords if you have any spare time. I don't know why anyone would buy the Mendit if regular PVC cement would do a good job for about 1/20 the price. The PVC cement will jell in the can after repeated use tho so you will be wasting some. To slow this I am cutting the dauber thing off so it isn't repeatedly placed back in the can and placing the can in a refrigerator. Even with these problems it is probably still way cheaper than the Mendit. The PVC cement dries in minutes with no odor.I spend enough money as it is on fishing and like to save some when I can.

Also fish can't digest soft plastics I found this out at my private pond. The bass grew to 3+ pounds in just 2 years and now some are around 8 pounds and its been 4 years.
Well I started catching skinny bass and had someone do some research/dissecting and we found that the skinny bass had senkos and worms in their stomach that didn't digest. The hooks did because bass have something that eats away the hook I guess stomach acid but the soft plastics never digested so no matter how much they ate, it would get thru the stomach cuz the worms blocked the tract
So yes, don't throw your soft plastics over board
