Frustrated.
I love to fish, however I don't seem to be very good at it. I fished Lavon for the last five or so years. I used to have a canoe and have always been limited to less windy areas so I could not get out in the big water. I never went home with a lot of fish. I wrote it off as well I don't have a lot of time to put on the water, to know good places to fish and I am limited to fishing during the day at the worst time. Usually about 8 or 9 am to about 2 pm. I moved to in July and I have had a kayak for about 9 months. I fish on Ray Hubbard now. I figured 5 minutes from the lake, sweet!! Well every time I go out on the lake, I check out a new place and I only catch maybe one fish. This week I had time off from work and managed to get out three different times, one time all night from 9 pm - 5:30 am. I figured play it easy and use minnows and night crawlers, "I will at least catch some cats" I thought. Nothing. I wanted to scream! I want to just put everything up and give up for a while. However I love to fish, always have. Can't stop thinking about it. O well.
I am writing this now for some words of encouragement, wisdom, help. Also if there is anyone out there on Ray Hubbard that wants a fishing buddy let me know. I can at least keep u company. Thanks.

When do you normally hit Hubbard? I can get out there most Wednesdays. This week is my daughter's Fair Day so I moved somethings around so I won't be out there this Wednesday but PM me your info and I'll send you my number and we can team up on Ol Mother Hubbard. Where were you fishing on Lavon? Also where have you hit on Hubbard?

You are fishing two relatively large and challenging bodies of water. Do you have a depth finder to find structure/etc? You mention that you tend to go to different parts "new places" and go between 9am and 2pm. This is making the challenge harder for sure. I'd recommend making things easier. Choose one lake and one fishy looking area on that lake (tree fields, grass, rock, the dam, any different structure/cover, wind blown points) and go at peak times (sunrise or sunset) Work that area until you find a pattern. Search this site for good spots on both lakes (I know the tree fields and powerplant outflow at Lavon can be really good) Pick one area that has a high probability of catching fish and keep going back to that area. You will end up having a really good day running into a huge school of sandies at Lavon sticking with a high yield area time and time again.

There are so many variables with fishing and going to different parts of the lake adds more variables. Eliminate the variables and you will have more success. Keep things simple at first--light or medium tackle with proven lures like roadrunners and rattletraps.

Another option is to find a smaller body of water (say South Lake in Farmersville) that may have a higher concentration of fish.

I can understand some frustration. I have had plenty of trips where I got skunked. It still happens occasionally, however usually now I enjoy some modest success. I would have to say that the fish finder has helped. But just knowing the shape of the contours of the lake is a big move in the right direction.
I think one of the most important things that I have learned is the right lures for the job. I fish a lot for Hybrids and Sandies. Fishing with a Hellbender or a Large Fat Free Shad as a downrigger to get the a Pet Spoon or Darting Shad down there has made a big difference in the quantity of fish I catch.
I also fish with a Chug Bug on occasion even when I don't see fish hitting the surface.
But I also fish other situations where different lures are required. I have learned what works by reading and fishing with others plus some trial and error of my own. I'll even use bait in some situations.
Still if I go fishing with Strider or Lusca they'll kick my butt just about every time. And when I read of professional guides, they will do better than I can even fishing the same water on the same day.
I have learned to be content knowing I am doing fairly well and a whole lot better than I used to, especially before I moved to Texas.
I have found I can do moderately well even showing up late, well after sunrise and going home early, around noon or 1 PM, especially in the summer when it gets hot in the afternoon.
I am not immune to getting information from other people as to what is working and where, although I have gotten real particular who fish with. And I want to know what lure or bait is working best. Doesn't hurt to ask and most people are willing to share.

I don't go too fast but I go pretty far.

What kind of rigs are you using? I've seen people new to fishing go overboard on gear, like 40 lb line and big hooks that were way too large.

Dan, I lived in Garland for 25 years, and I fished RH for bass all the time. You don't say what you are fishing for, but RH is a very good lake for several species, including bass, catfish and hybrids. There is also a good population of crappie. And there are white bass everywhere. I've caught 3 bass over 10# there. Try to hook up with guys that are catching fish, and PAY ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING THEY DO. All the little things add up when you are fishing.

Good luck with it!

Thank you. Make a lot of sense. I Stay on Ray Hubbard. Just try different areas to get the lay of the land. I do have a fish finder. Still learning to use it. Hummingbird 160. I appreciate your input.

Thank you everyone for your input. You all have made me feel better.
I have been using a two hook system with a weight and drift fishing with shad and night crawlers. As far as lures I use spoons, road runners, jigs and beetle spinners. I love crappie. I haven't fished for bass in a while. Where I grow up in Michigan I predominately fish for bass. However up north there is vegetation all over, so it has been a real challenge learning to fish down hear.
I had some success off Miller road near the kayak launch. That body of water. Its pretty deep. 20 feet in areas. I don't get beat up to much by the wind back there either. Thanks again fellas. God bless. Best of luck fishin'.
