I've noticed several people ask about the bluegill fishing on Ray Hubbard, and I've never fished it for bream, so I figured I'd go give it a shot. I fished out of my kayak today, and caught quite a few fish. No big fish to speak of, but seven made their way home with me for dinner tomorrow.
I fished this evening from 4:00 until 7:30. I was in 10ft of water casting up into 3.5ft of water, fishing rip rap. I used waxworms and crickets as bait, and the waxworms seemed to work the best. As I was fishing rip rap, I used a slip-float rig, set about three feet deep. I had some long-shank #6 cricket hooks, and was quite thankful for their length. It's sure amazing how quickly those gills can swallow a hook.
I don't know if the bluegill on Ray Hubbard just don't get very big, or if I was in the wrong spot (fishing too shallow etc.), but I plan on finding out.

Thanks for the report! Here on the San Antonio area lakes I have been getting some nice Gills in 8 to 12 feet of water using live worms bouncing em off of the bottom. Seems that sunken brush piles and drop off ledges are starting to hold more fish. The Sunfish are also very active right now.

Nice Report and thanks for sharing. How is Lake Ray Hubbard holding out during this drought? What is the condition of the lake? Did you get a lot of rain this past weekend?
Thanks.

Try the old railroad cut located west of Harbor Bay Marina. The water is 25 feet deep rising to 15 feet where the tracks were. I have not fished it for years but it was a sure thing years ago. Any good topo map of the lake will show the cut through the timber.

Thanks. Hubbard is doing pretty well. TPWD shows it as being nearly 7feet low, but you wouldn't guess it. I'm actually more of a Lavon fisherman, but Hubbard has more water in it so I've had to shift my focus. We got some rain this weekend, but it wasn't much. The weatherman built it up to be a big deal, but it didn't turn into anything. Try the old railroad cut located west of Harbor Bay Marina. One of these days I need to make a road trip up to the Dallas area and fish some of those Crappie lakes. Have you fished Ray Hubbard for Crappie? If so how was the bite and what type of baits did you use?

If so how was the bite and what type of baits did you use? I don't do much crappie fishing except during the spawn, and we'll go to Ray Hubbard then. I usually use a plain red and white jig then; sometimes I'll throw on a Roadrunner. If you time it right, you can pull some nice crappie out of Hubbard.
