I am looking to taking my step dad fishing the first weekend of October in the rockport, corpus area (we are in San Antonio). I was originally thinking of going to a pier but he is currently on pretty strong chemo and can't be in the sun all day. Any other ideas where we can go during the day to catch a few of whatever? We aren't picky on what we catch as long as we catch something. Was also thinking of stopping somewhere along the highway between port a and aransas pass so I could set up my pop up tent for him.

Any ideas of where to go or what to look for? We have fished the surf a few times with the family and had a blast catching whiting on every cast for an hr. Would the surf be any good during the day? Or should I try to figure out a way to do a overnight trip to stat out of the sun altogether?

Thanks

The surf will be good for reds, whiting and Pompano. If you guys just want to catch fish and hang out, pick any spot along the beach and you should do fine

Thanks for the info Bull Tide...

Think we will stop on the beach near Packery, or is it worth it to drive all the way up to Port A and fish the beach up there?

Sooo... I have been watching the forecasts and wonder if it is worth it to drive down tomorrow (Sunday) and deal with 25 mph winds or should i *cough cough* call in sick and go on monday when the winds will be lighter? Will the high winds have the negative impact on the fishing that I am thinking they will?

i would "cough cough" call in and fish monday.you dont have to deal with the wind or the crowds and it seems fishing is better after the winds calm down after a front.JMO good luck whenever you decide to go.

3rd day after the front is usually the magic time.

*cough cough* *sneeze sneeze* I do feel something coming on. Monday is really the only day i dont have something going on at work other than "work" so i think this will be our best bet. Hope we catch something, anything really. Plan on starting at packery channel and move out to the surf if no takers there. Taking the cast net, fish bites and going to buy some insurance (shrimp) to be safe. Would be nice to catch something other than hardheads but will take whatever we can get.

Thanks for everyone's input. It really is appreciated!

Biggest thing I caught was a sunburn... had a few good hard hits but only a couple whiting and 4-5 hard heads. We stopped at the packery jetty and nobody was catching anything so we moved over to the surf. Camped out on the surf for the rest of the day. I never realized those darn hard heads would hit mullet like they did. We tried everything we could think of but no reds. We didnt see anyone else catching anything else either. The water was fairly clear compared to what I am use to seeing up there. Plenty of mullet in the surf tho... just couldnt get any real takers.

On the bright side it was a beautiful day and a bad day fishin is always better than a day at work so no complaints. There is always next time!
