I'm new to using braid and I have heard that it will slip if you tie directly to the reel spool. Is it best to put some mono on as a backing and tie the braid to it to stop slippage? Any advice will be much appreciated guys.

Yeah, personally I keep a huge spool of 15# big game and back all my braid reels with it. I've never had a problem with slipping, probably put 15 yards on just because it uses less braid and I've never spooled it to the mono casting with that much.

Several reasons to use backing of mono for braid. Unless you cast or let out more than 75 yards off your spool there is no need to put more than 75 yards of braid on the reel. For a reel to work properly it needs to be filled to a maximum capacity of line. To fill a reel completely with with a top quality braid could cost $50-100 in braid depending on pound test. because of the small diameter of braid some reels have a problem level spooling braid. Adusting the backing helps that. There are more advantages to backing.

To fill a reel completely with with a top quality braid could cost $50-100 in braid depending on pound test. because of the small diameter of braid some reels have a problem level spooling braid. it's less than $20.00 to put a complete spool of 65lb power pro if you wanted. But I get two backing spools with mono.

I usually spool about 15-20 yrds of 14# mono on my reels, and fill the rest with braid. Works great for me!

What kind of braid are you using that cost $50-$100 to spool a baitcaster? It's $20 max unless you're spooling an offshore saltwater reel.

I use black electrical tape and wrap it around the spool a couple times then just spool it normal, never had a problem.
