Anyone here used avet reels for saltwater fishing? Im looking into geting an avet reel that will be for inshore fishing mostly PIER n surf fishing off on the galveston n surrounding area, seabrook, laporte, freeport.. Want an avet for surf rod 8" 9" footer rod for landing those big bull reds/drums n maybe some small 4"-5" sharks dat might come along.. Im new to the whole conventional/cast lever drag reels , have always been using spinning reels never have i used a casting reel n would like to know if an avet would be good for a newbie.. But I think its time for a bit of an upgrade and have heard good things about those avets n really like those different styles n colors available.. I have been looking into the avet jx or the jL series wich can be single or 2speed also which have max drags of 15 strike and 20 full.. Also what would be better braid or a mono spool. Like I said want an avet for mainly pier n surf mostly pier fishing for big reds/drums 32"+ inches n other fish in that range.. Would this be a good reel for this type of fishing or should i consider another series avet reel ? Any info pros/cons would greatly be appreciated.. Like stated Im new to this type of reel n really would like to get any info from u guys that have fished this type of fishing with avet reels.. Also what is the M.C. Cast on these avets? N what #line shoud I spool it with? Thanks in advance..

Avet makes some good reels I only used them on a fishing boat. So casting from shore I have no exp with. One draw back to using them for surf fishing is they don't have level wind. A lot of people use reels with out it, just takes practice. I like the Abu Garcia 7000, 9000, or 10000 for bull reds, and the Penn Squall it comes in 2 speed as well as level wind. If sharks are in your wheelhouse get a squall Sq 50. Either way you can't go wrong though.

Good Luck! Either the JX or LX are both great reels, I would go with the the JX MC, my self. No level wind is a pain in the beginning, but it does make for less problems when working big fish. MC stands for Magic Cast. That means it has magnetic casting brakes, it makes casting a heck of a lot easier, less backlashes. These reels are not beginner reels, and adding MC helps a lot in the long run. There is a lot of information HERE. Check out the FAQ page. When starting out, you will be spending a lot of time replacing line because of back lashes, get something strong, and inexpensive, like Bullbuster or Big Game. As you get more comfortable with the rig you can think about using braid. The biggest thing is you will have to practice, practice, practice, and practice some more.

I have the Pro30 wide, it is my go to reel, I mostly bottom fish and have no regrets on my purchase other than possible a 50 size but I made the right choice, never any problem and would buy again.
