I recently bought an All Star Team Crankbait rod that is medium power and moderate action. I have used it for shallow diving crankbaits and buzzbaits and I love it. Paired with an H2O Mettle it casts like a dream. I can reel in those baits all day without using any effort.

However, when I switch to a 1/2 ounce spinnerbait I notice that it gets more difficult to reel the lure in. In addition, the rod gets quite a bend in it when working the lure (not like when fighting a fish, but considerably more than when working a crankbait or buzzbait). I notice that the All Star Team Spinnerbait rod is rated as medium-heavy/medium-fast. Is the spinnerbait more difficult to reel in because the rod is not heavy enough, or is it the action? Or am I barking up the wrong tree and just need to hit the weights so I can reel longer without getting tired? The reason I am asking is because I am likely going to add a few more rods to my arsenal and would like a rod that would allow me to use spinnerbaits for long stretches of time.

The heavier the action of a rod, the deeper it will bend. An ultra-fast action rod, for example, will bend very close to the tip. A moderate-action rod will bend more toward the middle of the rod. Power is the amount of force it takes to cause this bend. The deeper a lure goes through water, the greater the force on the rod. So in that case a moderate-action rod will have a deeper bend than a fast-action rod. If the problem is with only a ½ ounce spinner bait, it’s most likely the action. But yes, a medium-heavy/medium-fast rod should do better. I’d also consider a fast-action rod.

Power and action work together. The heavier the power of the rod, the more force it takes to bend it. This is also a factor in the cast, where heavier power rods will usually cast farther and with heavier baits. But these rods are way too heavy (in actual weight) for my liking. There is also the reel to consider. A round baitcast reel is far more rigid and powerful than a low-profile baitcast reel or a spinning reel. It will pull a lure through cover much easier.

The best all-around rod I use is a g loomis mag-medium/ultra-fast action rod. Using mono, it will hook a fish with a slight tug. But a slower action rod, fast or medium-fast, is probably preferable for lure fishing.

Thanks. With Academy putting a lot of their rods on clearance I was able to pick up a 6'6" medium heavy-fast action All Star rod for cheap. It is actually the Worm rod, but I expect it to work great for what I need. The All Star Spinnerbait rod is what I wanted but it was full price. It is medium heavy-fast action but is 6'10" long, so there is not much of a difference in it and what I got. Besides, when the Spinnerbait rod goes on sale I can always purchase it and use the rod I just bought for something else.

here's a simple rule to go by. Med action treble hook baits med he and he for single hook baits. Put some 15 lb big game on a med action rod and a med hev and you can cover all your basics.
