Hey guys, bought a new setup for swimbaits recently.
Reel is Okuma Citrix Rod is BPS IM6 7'6" heavy action Sufix Castable Fluorocarbon 20lb test
All these are new so i am not sure what is causing the problem. I put on a castaic 6" baby bass swimbait, which is pretty heavy. I let some line out and went to reel it to place it on my bait keeper. Well during this it made an awful rubbing sound on the guide and literally shredded my line into a ball of fibers. What gives?

Bad guide, more than likely the tip... +1. Be sure to replace all of the line after you have fixed the problem too.

If all inserts are in place, take a qtip rotate it around the inside of the line guides. If the guide pulls cotton off, you have found your problem guide.

Had the same problem. Could hear and feel line coming thru guides. Line was shredding. Tip guide had a small nick in the insert. Replaced tip, problem solved.

Awesome idea with q-tip. Probably not a bad idea to do as preventative maintenance on rods.

I had the same problem with a shimano sellus rod a few years back. It shredded brand new fluoro and i broke off a few nice fish.

make sure the insert isn't gone. rough guides could be as well.

The q-tip will let you know the culprit. Its a good idea to do it every line change or every other

If that is a new rod it would be back at BPS if it were me. Checking the guide is fine, but a new rod should not have this problem

I have cracked or chipped tip guides by poking lures to free them from hangups or by accidentally whacking the trolling motor or by grinding them on the garage ceiling. Ways to break those fragile ceramic rings are limited only by your imagination. They're easy to replace yourself though, so if you haven't learned to do it you need to.

Probably a guide but also check the line guide in the reel.
