I have always thought that throwing used soft plastics in the water was wrong and litering. I also think that some fish might actually try to eat them. Could this be part of the reason we see fish with inverted bellies and weird shaped bodies? Why don't people just put them in a bag and throw them away in the trash? also, fishing line. Please don't throw it in the lake.
thanks

I dont mind jug and trot lines. It's when someone throws a bags worth of worms in the water and a spools worth of line!

It amazes me how many people do this. If a fish will eat a soft plastic on a hook he'll eat it just laying on the bottom as well. At a recent stop at a bait shop in Del Rio the owner showed me a zip lock bag that had 6 or 7 soft plastics in it that he said came from the belly of a 5# bass. I'm no biologist and I'm pretty sure a bass will pass soft plastic but how long does it take? It surely doesn't help normal digestion. On a trip to Oak Creek I was motoring along a Creek channel and heard some commotion, looked to my right and saw a bird thrashing around on the surface. I went over to check it out and he was all tangled in a fairly large amount of fishing line. It was wrapped all around his legs and wings, causing several lacerations. My partner cut him out (got pecked and bitten a couple times) and we were thinking about where we could take him to get him cleaned up when he broke free and flew off. I was happy to see that and I hope he lived to see another day. Please guys, throw this stuff away properly! It doesn't take long to do and it's better for the lakes we so love!

Those plastics can be recycled!! Bag em up and when you get a bunch give them to some one that will recycle them!! Lets keep them out of lakes and land fills!!

I started a new job in 2012 and one of the guys there fishes a lot and he found out I had a boat so I invited him to go fishing one morning. After he would put a new worm on he would try it for a few times then pull it off and toss it in the lake. I had to ask him a few times to toss them in my boat. Needless to say I still have not had him I the boat since and he's asked several times when we are going out again.

I just throw them in the floor, we call it putting them on injured reserve, just in case we run out we can go through them again.

I keep a few plastic bags in the boat and at the end of the day I put all the trash in one of them and toss it in the garbage can at the ramp. If there is not one there I put it in my can at home. That is were it belongs not in the lake.

It is absolutely littering, not to mention disrespectful and the opposite of the conservationist that fishermen should be. It also poisons the fish and the water with the petrochemicals that are used in the production of the plastics. Studies have found that the estrogen mimickers in plastics such as BPA can cause gender confusion in fish.
BTW, humans shouldn't consume anything out of that type of plastic either.

Most plastics you can re-melt using a microwave an a low heat setting (stirring every 30 seconds). I've a stockpile of watermellon red zoom stuff waiting to be melted and poured.
Just make sure you aren't planning to nuke your lunch afterward, wear a good mask, do this in a well ventilated area, and don't let your better half see you terrorizing her microwave.
