I've caught walleye while trolling up in Canada. They'll hit minnows, leeches, and worms. Bottom bouncer rigs worked well when trolling, they might work when drifting in a kayak.

I do an annual Canada walleye trip, nightcrawlers and minnows work best fished on structure. They like sand and gravel close to channel ledges and flats, if you have color sonar they will be on the bottom and easily missed if you don't have color sonar.

Look up lindy rigs and slow death rigs, you can also drift jigs tipped with minnows and nightcrawlers for them too, I prefer the slow death with live nightcrawlers in the kind of open water you will find at Murray.

When they bite you need to feed them some line, with the warmer temps they will be lethargic at best. They have hard mouths so a solid hook set is important. I usually use medium spinning tackle with 8-10 lb line for them, they have lots of teeth and super sharp gill plates so check your line regularly if you are catching them.

I'd throw some flutter spoons--might catch some big bass also.

I was up there in June and struggling to catch larger bass... Went to the dam and started fishing deep with a three inch flutter spoon in about 25 feet.. At one point I realized that there were fish following the spoon up to about 8 feet deep (very clear water there)... It was walleyes. I tried to seal the deal but just couldn't get them to commit.. Maybe a smaller jigging spoon tipped with a night crawler and fished slow and vertical would have worked? I dunno. My guess is you gotta go deep.

If you can't get on the wallies, the rocks just near martins landing ramp hold lots of smallies...

Use a crankbait for a search bait & then slow down with bottom related live bait or jig w/ grub.

up north, this time of year you will find them deep, 40-80' of water. use some chugging irons, or bottom bouncers with trailing worm harness and a nightcrawler. slow troll in areas that have ledges/dropoffs.

you can also drift for them, jigging bucktail jigs tipped with a 6-8" worm

have fun! best fishing is at night or dawn/dusk when light levels are low.

if you catch a big enough walleye you can cut out the cheek meat!

Find them deep with your electronics on humps & ridges then what Bert said works great.

ya What Bert Said. Some folks use a large night crawler on a circle Hook Like for catfish. sinker is 8-12" up from hook. set right on bottom. trick is inject them with air where they float just off bottom. WALLIES are light sensitive and active at night. Also a round lead head hook yellow in color baitless at night around boat ramps set on bottom. CAUTION REMEMBER-->> DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIP GRAB A HOOKED WALLEYE. NET EM. EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD EATING TOO

Fished for them in Canada and North Dakota as a kid. Big yellow feathered jigs or smaller spoons were what worked best and what the locals used bouncing off bottom in deeper water.

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

High mercury content in Meredith, consumption advisory for fish there FYI.

Most likely a power plant, fertilizer would be PCBs.
