I think the intentions are correct, but I think mandatory draining of boats will have little impact on reducing the spread. I can see them being on the trailer more of an issue than on the boat (carpet, more nooks and crannies to attach to). Plus, can't stop the birds from lake and pond hopping, then when we get rain, can't stop the flow to other locations. Really don't see them going to the expense of providing locations to spray off with fresh water either.

The intent of these rules is to help stop the spread of the Zebra mussle LARVAE, not adult Zebra mussles.

Is a treatment to do for them to kill the larvae? My son mentioned bleach? 100* plus in your garage should do it also. When draining things be sure to trim your engine down and let the water drain out of it.

What about the pipes and pumps that transfer water from lakes to pump houses into water treatment facilities

The various river authorities and water treatment plants use multiple strainers and filters of varying micron levels to extract most of the snails, mollusks and other foreign debris prior to entering into the clean water systems. This way you don't have to drink any more larva than is absolutely necessary....Cheers cheers.

One of the main issues. The larva attach themselves to the pipes and the mature, this continues till the pipe is plugged. And at the rate the Zebras multiply, it don't take long.

We have Asian clams here at Lake Graham and I think they are kinda cousins to zebra mussels. We have taken mature clams and dropped them in a 18% solution of bleach for 7 days. When we pulled them out they were still alive. So bleach may not be the answer.

I think they are going to spread no matter what we do. Its just a matter of time. Resources should be spent in trying to find ways to live with them not in trying to prevent them IMHO.

the larva cant stay alive more than 3 days in stagnant water, so if you dont use your boat for a week it cant really transfer them. Mine sits in a hot garage between weekends.
