I'm trying to decide on the best way to build a new shop. Looking at a 30x40 with a 24x24 carport off to one side. What do you guys recommend: 1. All metal 2. Pole building 3. Hybrid Steel frame with stud framed walls. I want to insulate it to around R-13 or higher and want to build around a 15x15 air conditioned room. Sketch

Friend on here just had a 30 x 60 all metal building built with insulation. No carport but can get both his truck and boat in while they are hooked up.
Really nice shop but he did mention he wished he would of made it bigger or added a carport. His is 14' at the peak and he says he should of gone 16' to add a second floor inside for extra storage.
Build a big of one as you can afford. Make sure and put your carport on the east or north side for protection from the sun.

The current plan has the carport on the north side and a peak height of 20ft. I plan on adding 2nd story storage and may even add it on the carport.
Anyone have experience with the spray foam insulation? Some of the reasons I thought to use wood framing is insulation and finish out of the interior.

Spray foam insulation is not worth the cost in a house, much less a shop. The standard metal building rolls of insulation should be adequate. My shop is always relatively comfortable and it's not even air conditioned. If it's 100+ outside, it's usually upper 80s in the shop. And when it got real cold out there, it didn't take much heat to start warming things up a bit.
Go with all metal. 2nd story storage is a great feature if you can afford it.
The only reason I would suggest wood framing is that you can put OSB on the inside and use it to hang tools on the wall. That's a great idea, but you'll probably also have to brick it if you do wood frame (or I guess you could do siding...). Either way, you're probably talking about considerably more money than a steel building. Lumber ain't cheap. Plus, it's a fire hazard if you are doing any welding in the shop.

Did you guys go with a white or galvalume roof? Curious how anything but white does in the summer.

His roof matched the sides. It is light cream/tan with a darker border.

As long as it's light colored, I don't think it matters. But I think the builder put a white roof on mine. Tan or light gray or something wouldn't be noticeably warmer in the summer.

Looking at Muellers option they now have darker colors with higher emissivity and reflectivity. Seems unpainted metal is worse than a dark painted color. That makes my head hurt.

Ive been told build it twice as big as you think you need.
Build it as tall as you can. It lets the heat rise higher in the building above you.
My dad added some panels on the roof that let natural light in makes it brighter and we can walk around with out turning the lights on during the day.

Put twice as many electrical outlets in it as you think you need , you cant have too many.I have a 30 by 24 in my back yard would have built bigger but that was as big as the city would permit me for.Best money I ever spent.
