New To This Forum, Was Hoping Y'all Could Help Me Out.. I'm Familiar With Kayaking To The Rigs, And Fishing For Reds From The Jetty But I Plan To Fish The Rocks From The Yak This Weekend In Hopes For A BullRed. Can Anyone Offer Any Tips On Where I Should Anchor And WhAt I Should Throw To Hopefully HookUp With One? Particularly With Artificial, Spoons Or Heavily WeighTed Plastics,Etc.. I Also Understand The Actual Fall "Run" Hasn't Begun But I Know You Can Still Get Em. Thanks In Advance

According to tpwd fishing reports, bull red fishing heats up between the 10th and 20th of September in Port Aransas. I can't personally verify the fishing there in September until my 10 day mid-September trip. "Crabs and natural baits" is the wording most used to catch them. I hear they're frequently at the jetty.

Ya I've Caught Plenty There In The Middle Of The Run On Mullet, Whiting, Crab, And Just About Anything Cut. But I'm Wanting To Target Them With Artificial. I Think I Heard SomeOne Say That Spoons Are Working, Not Sure Channel Or Surf Side, Gotta Be A Heavy Spoon If Fishing The Channel. Ive Also Heard Spoonr LUres Being Used, Never Used Em Myself. Hoping Some Locals Could Chime In Or Shoot Me A pm..

Whiting are good eatin'!

I fillet them and then fry em up. I only keep 10 inches or bigger.

My wife goes a little healthier route and poaches them. They want to fall apart when poached though.

I know a lot of people who scale em, gut em, cut the heads off and cook em whole.

Whiting are really good. I cook them the same way as Pferox, but being lazier, I try to keep those 12 inches and bigger.
No clue what to recommend for bull reds on artificials, Gulp shrimp? I assume they are feeding off the bottoms, so you're gonna need something heavy and smelly/flashy

Before we had kids and school to deal with, my wife and I would always make our trips to Port A in mid-late Sept since that was when our anniversary was plus tourists are gone and room rates are lower. I enjoyed good luck on bull reds walking to near the end of the south jetty. From the last flat area to the end was always best for me. I hate messing with bait so I generally used lures. Large spoons will work but I've done best with those at first light, maybe the reds are up higher in the water column. My best bait has been Storm Wildeye Shads in the mullet color. I prefer the ones that are about 6" long, I think the built in lead head weighs close to 1 oz. Best times seem to be on outgoing tides as that draws the bait out. Make looooong casts upcurrent, allow a little line to play out, engage reel and start a slow steady retrieve as the lure drifts outs left to right if fishing the channel side. Always worked for me.

get a 6" or bigger swim bait or paddle tail and put it on a 1/2 to 3/4oz. jig head and drop that down next to the rocks at the end of the jetty. i used white swim baits last time i was down but other colors will work as well... anchor out away from the jetty and throw the bait out towards the rocks and let it fall till it hits the rocks or bottom and start twitching it in and letting it drop occasionally...

use small live blue crabs, small live mullet..or fresh cut mullet,or fresh mid section of blue crab..
walk south jetty to past mid area..you will see a large green buoy
in the jetty...walk past that about 30 yards.cast out towards it.
Before you get to buoy is rock bottom out to buoy..past buoy is sand bottom at buoy and 50--60 yards past then rocks again to the open mouth of jetty..If nothing there...walk to end of jetty and opening..if seas are rough and windy ...do not go..it is to dangerous.you want greenish water..dark water...no good.
Lots of trout as well...You want lots of great eating whiting..fish the surf in winter with ghost shrimp..BIG whiting and LOTS of them.
