Yes, I had all kinds of trouble with hook sets when I first started using them. I tried 5 brands that had screwlocks and I missed more fish than I caught with every one. Then I tried the barb style keeper that Strike King makes. Now I very seldom ever miss a bite on a shaky head. Now I am using some heads from Flat Lands Customs that have a 5/0 gama hook that are bad to the bone. thumb

Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!

Yes, you have to set the hook hard with a shakey head. Even though it's considered a finesse technique with lighter line, the single hook most manufacturers use is thick--you really have to drive it through. Those Flat Land Customs with the gama hook sound great--love the sharpness, strength, and thinness of the gama hook.

When I first started fishing shakey heads, I had a 1 to 4 hookup ratio. After inspecting the worm, I realized that there was several bite marks on the tail and only a few on the worm near the head. My solution was to wait 3 or 4 seconds after I felt the initial hit to set the hook. Now if the hit it, I have a 90% hookup ratio. As for the actual jig head I use spots and owners as well as some hand poured ones.

alot of times anymore if i'm using a 1/4 ounce or bigger i throw it on a medium heavy baitcasting outfit as opposed to spinning gear and i think that helps my hook up ratio a ton. I still throw the 1/8th and below on a spinning rod though.

As Bill Dance says "count to 3".. "1...2...*3*!<SET>"
Of course, they might drop it in less than 3 too, just depends on how fickle they are that day. If you feel a "hard" hit and it starts swimming, set hard and fast! If you barely feel it, and it starts moving sideways without any hard "tick", they may just have the tail, wait till you feel firm (not mushy) resistance or a second "tick" (grabbing the whole thing), then set the hook. Second "tick" might be them spitting it out though, again, there isn't any guarantee until you get a feel for what they are doing that day.

Paydirtcustomjigs.com makes a good shakey head.

Also as I mainly fish shakeys deep I have had many fish that eat the whole rig and will fight you to the top, only to open thier mouth and you get to watch that rig (intact) exit thier lips.

^^that plus tournament day = a grown man crying like a beech on the front deck.

You might be bending/flexing the hooks. Most shakey heads have ******* hooks.

Try a Spot Remover hook. I hardly ever miss fish with them.

If you want a beefy shakey head with a nice wide gap hook I reccomend the Xcite brand X-lock shakey heads. Never had any issues with them. Yum also makes a Pumpkin ed that is similar but I dont like the head as much as I do the Xcite brand.

Although you need a good hook set, keep in mind that if you set the hook too hard and your fishing shallow or not too far from boat, you could be over setting and creating a large hole for them to throw the hook.
I went to using a medium heavy fast action rod from TFO and adjust my hook sets according to line type and distance. I lose very few fish since I done this.
Just sayin.....
