So...I've caught bluegill, crappie, sunfish, etc. in Michigan and Alabama ALOT. But I have never seen this one. I've caught quite a few lately while bass fishing. My 6 year old daughter hooked a couple as well, below is her catch.

I'm thinking this is a Warmouth but it doesn't have the mouth like one or the black tab on it's gill. Then I thought maybe some strange cross between a bluegill and a rio grande perch. But I'm not sure and can't find any pictures on the web that match it. What I am sure of is their freaking dorsal tines are pokier than most panfish I've handled and it stings like the dickens when they impale your hands.

Too bad it's catch and release per my HOA and I'm one of those weird people that follow the rules, lol. I have eaten it before but never actually seen one.

The first couple of breeding pairs came from Africa to the San Antonio Zoo many years ago - They are prolific breeders - protecting their young in their mouths so most offspring survive... Soon the SA started putting the fish in river and
Zoo customer would feed them a Quauter at a time.... fish food
A flood washed them down the SA river into Calaveras and Braunig Lake, Soon the fish where over running the lakes...
I believe it is against the law to transport them alive

I don't know the rules exactly so just thinking aloud. Is a Talapia actually a game fish? If not, do you still have to follow catch and release? Of course, I wouldn't want you getting in trouble with you HOA but might be worth checking into.

What I know about the species is that in the near future once the population gets too big for the tank... Your HOA will be
letting some of those larger fish find their way to the dinner table.....

It is unlawful to release tilapia in Texas waters. All tilapia must be retained by state law.
