Kayak Bass Fishing with Superman – O. H. Ivie Aug 16-18 2013

Late in the week I notice the weather at lake O. H. Ivie was looking good for mid August in texas. Highs only in the mid 90's not our typical 100's +.

So Deric (aka Superman) and start scheming about sneaking quietly out to our favorite west Texas lake. We decide to head out Thursday nite and fish through Sunday morning. We load up Derics trailer and head out to Elm Creek Village.

Friday August 16, 2013
We get up at 4 am and head down to rig up the yaks. We know there is a strong weather disturbance up north in Oklahoma heading south and wonder if it will make it down to us. So we stay mind full of the potential for a strong storm and we decide not to venture to far. The morning was a crisp and clear 70 deg. I catch a few small ones on early topwater bite and we notice the wind has started white capping in the main lake. We stick it out in the protected slough then strong thunder boomers start. It became apparent we are in for a direct hit and we beach the yaks and head up to a picnic area for shelter.

We see the weather maps and know that we will have about a hour till the next line hits us so we head back to the ramp area and fish there till it gets bad again.

I cast up next to a tree and have a strong bite and it gets off. Then immediately cast right back and catch a nice 24 7/8" bass. This ties my personal best. Unfortunately my video camera was off so I did not get a video of the fight. Deric makes a 1/4 mile paddle to me on double speed against the wind for a few Picts, then we have to head to ramp due to the weather again. We decide to eat a early lunch at elm Creek village. After about a hour the line passes and we head back out to where I got that big fish. In just a few casts I catch a nice 22" 5.5 lb bass. Deric picks up a nice 17-18" bass.

Once the clouds Clear the bite shuts off. We stick out the rest of the day and fish past dark without another fish.

No storms forecasted we launch at Concho Park at 5:30 am. We have to paddle about 1/4 mile to the Colorado river and start fishing. Man this area looks good. Deep water, rocks and huge timber. Bass should be jumping in the boat. I get a few bites on topwater but they manage to get off. Deric manages to get the skunk off with a few fish. Once sun is up we could not by a bite. This area really has potential. I know I'll visit it again under better conditions. At noon we pack up and head back to Elm Creek for lunch and a nap in the room.

At about 5 ish we make our way up elm creek for the evening bite. We have some success. In quick order I hook up with a nice smallmouth. It gets wrapped up in a tree and the wind is pushing me away. Deric "Superman" comes to the rescue and gets the bass out if the tree nearly flipping his yak in the process. This ended up being my pb smallie at 19". Thanks Deric!

Deric gets a few really nice bass on topwater just as the evening sets in. I was in good position to get a good video of one of his catches.

We continue fishing well past dark till about 10pm. Then pack up and back to the room.

Sunday August 18, 2013
One more early 4 am wake up and it's off to elm creek for the early bite. Weather was beautiful for August in texas. The bite was slow. Deric manages one good fish and had one knock his wake bait flying. I pick up one about 17". At 11:00 we decide to pack it in and head home.

Was a good trip, the bite was slow and we managed a few good fish. This makes 2 trips in a row for me to Ivie where i caught or equaled a personal best. 3 pb's in two trips is not to shabby. Ivie is like that though, tough fishing with a occasional reward. Good weather and not too hot.

This trip showed me something that is in Derics sig. "I've never been good but I've been lucky". If the weather had not forced me to the back end of a slough I would not have caught the two decent fish I did. I was lucky the storm blew me on to the good fish I caught. Deric is a better fisherman than me and I was luckier this trip.

Here is the Video and some pics.

WTG guys... Mike you sure are the man on that lake... I think I need to enlist your guide services there some time. I've fished there 3 days total and I don't think I've managed a keeper sized fish yet... frown

That biggun is a SLAUNCH!!! Congrats on the new PB!

Great video man I really enjoyed that.

Did you rig up that GoPro mount on your hat yourself? I bought one and I hate it, doesn't fit very securely. The head strap has been giving me headaches, it's either too tight and hurts or it's too loose and I worry about it falling off. I want to make one like you have.

Yes I took the arm strap mount and cut the strap off. Drilled 4 holes throught it and the hat. Then used number 8 cres bolts and nuts and bolted it on. The head strap hurts and isn't secure.

Nice video and fish!! That area looks like paradise. I see why you would want to fish there. I've got to start learning how to use my video camera. Maybe you can start a class on video production!!

ON a different subject, do you have any idea what kind of seat Deric is using in his Commander. I have a Commander also, and I just put a Travel chair in it. I like it much better, but I'm still open to what works, and he looks pretty comfortable.
