Fantastic striper fishery at Lake Texoma, about 1.5 hr north of Dallas. It ain't salt, but the same stripers you fish for up there.

Freeport/Surfside are right at 4.75 hours from my house in N. Dallas. We like it there much better than Galveston. Better offshore and I think better surf fishing. Many reasonable hotels in Lake Jackson minutes from the water. As a bonus you get to stop at Buc-ees

Galveston is great if you live in the Houston area, but if you are coming from anywhere else and you don't own a house down here, I'd go further South, even if it's Freeport.
Galveston bay is next to the 4th biggest city in America, so yeah it gets hit hard all the time.
Also the water keeps getting cleaner and prettier the farther south you go.

I fish Joe Pool about every other week when I'm not at Texoma. All these lakes have good fishing. Lots of good fishing in Oklahoma as well. There's more shoreline in the state of OK than CA.
Texoma is really something. It has some of the best natural production of striper in the U.S. The aesthetics of the lake with its all natural sand beaches will blow you away.
