Results: 267 caught: 231 whites mostly between 14 and 16 inches, 26 hybrids with largest 24 inches, 6 cats and 4 keeper yellow bass.

Details: We launched at Holiday and were at 1st spot by 8:20AM. It was the hump just NE of Holiday - think it is Wolf Creek Hump? We marked fish in 10 to 15 fow and started catching immediately with 2 of 1st 3 hybrids. We kept catching them there. If they slowed we'd move around a little and find them again. Kept doing this on that hump til 1 PM. Fastguy came by twice while we were at that spot and saw him land a really nice hybrid. He told us of a structure out from the big pump-house building on the west side north of Holiday (we went there last- see below).

They never stopped biting at Wolf Creek, and I wanted to try some spots by the dam and on the east side - so off we went. By this time we had 95 whites and 20 hybrids. At the eastern half of the dam we marked fish in 10 to 16 fow as it dropped off into deeper water. Sat there and caught 41 more big whites. Left them biting to try the hump due north of our dam spot (sorry - don't know the names of these structures). Marked fish there in 12 to 16 fow and caught 75 more big whites - one going 17 inches and 6 more hybrids. At 4PM we left them biting to have time to try the spot Fastguy had told us about. We found a structure in that vicinity - a ridge running ENE and WSW. Marked fish in 12 to 16 fow and caught the rest of our fish here. Quit at 5:20 PM and headed back to Holiday.

All our fish were caught on #4 silver Mepps spinners. I tried #2 but no takers.

Dennis That was some good fishing ! That just shows everyone that the little Mepps spinner will work on any lake and will catch whites or hybrids , and you don`t have to have live bait to have a great day of fishing. Good Report

Very nice report dennis

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Thanks for the report Dennis! Were you using any split shot with the #4 Mepps? I've been using a very slow retrieve lately with the Mepps and found this to be most effective. What did you find worked on speed of retrieve? And, was your angle of retrieve more horizontal or somewhat vertical? I'm learning to try all these variables until I get the right combination.

@PlanoKeith: Your comment was in good nature, but allows me to make an important point. It IS tempting to wish you were already retired and could fish all you want. For some perspective though, my dad loved the outdoors and looked forward to retirement, and a year before retirement he was diagnosed with cancer and died 10 months later at age 60. For everyone reading this, make every day and every year count because you don't have any guarantees of a long retirement. I certainly have been blessed with already 15 years of retirement, but I kept reminding myself during my working years NOT to live for retirement.

@Bry Fly: I never use a weight with a #4 Mepps. If you have 10 to 12 lb line, it is thin enough to get to the bottom fast - no weight needed. The fish wanted a lot of start and stop action keeping Mepps close to the bottom, and long casts worked best meaning Mepps was pulled more horizontally than vertically. What seemed to work best to entice the hybrids was to make a long cast and as the Mepps was falling with free spinning reel, tap the reel with your thumb causing it to repeatedly hesitate as it falls (say every second or two). When it gets to bottom, point rod at the line and carefully take up the slack. Then crank it medium to medium fast 3 turns of the reel handle. They would hit it within those 3 turns. Generally the whites preferred a lot of starting and stopping alternating fast and slow retrieve. They would not hit it burned up long distances. Had to keep bait very close to bottom with short retrieves(1 to 4 cranks of reel).

It occurred to me that Champion Fish was right-on with his comment. A year ago Ed and I went to Lake Limestone and fished the same amount of time using the same methods covering the deep-end half of the lake. We caught a total of 27 fish - only 4 of which were white bass. You can only catch the numbers we caught yesterday if they are there to catch. Tawakoni is indeed one of the best, if not the best, hybrid/white bass lakes in the state.
